scale that raindrop is like a bomb,
tearing soil into tiny fragments,
tossing them in the air and gouging
a crater in the earth. Now on our
scale, one raindrop is insignificant,
but raindrops come in the billions
and together they play a key role in
soil erosion.
These tiny bombs break soil into
pieces small enough to be carried
away in water runoff. And this kind
of runoff erosion is becoming a
serious problem for everyone. This
erosion is washing away our most
fertile and productive farmland...
that translates to higher food
costs., .not to mention the costs of
filtering and treating polluted
water.

many farmers ask the question,
does winter wheat need fertilizing 7
According to Extension
Agronomist, topdressing with
fertilizer may or may not be a good
idea. There are several things that
should be considered before
making the decision.
In the first place, do not topdress
winter wheat with a fertilizer that
contains nitrogen if the wheat is to
be overseeded with clover or
alfalfa. Nitrogen causes heavy
growth of wheat which may
smother out the new seeding. Now
the winter wheat fields that have
come through the winter thin,
should be topdressed. Use only a
straight nitrogen fertilizer, such as
urea. Topdressing winter wheat
with phosphate or potash have not
given any increased wheat yields.
Apply the nitrogen fertilizer m
early spring at the rate of 3040
pounds of acutal nitrogen per acre.
