BlB—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 24,1984 Huber addresses Lampeter-Strasburg’s Garden Spot FFA BY DICK ANGLESTEIN LAMPETER Lancaster County Commissioner James Huber paid tribute to the role that FFA is playing now and will play in the future in farmland preser vation at the Parent and Member Banquet of the Garden Spot Chapter of Lampeter-Strasburg High School Thursday, March 15, at the Lampeter Fire Hall “You, more than any other group, will determine if we preserve farmland and agriculture in Lancaster County,” Huber told the Future Farmers, who gathered for their annual awards program. Huber also paid tribute to Strasburg High School are Mike Hall, Star Greenhand; and Karen Shertzer, Star Chapter Farmer. Huber, who holds an Honorary Keystone Farmer Degree, called on the FFA chapter members to remain dedicated to the soil and farming. Among the chapter’s top award winners were Karen Shertzer, who was named Star Chapter Farmer, and Mike Hall, this year’s Star Greenhand Other major award winners were Don Welk, proficiency winner in crop production who also received the DeKalb Award; and Little Dutchmen FFA Honored at Ba 40 Among top award winners at the annual banquet of the Garden Spot FFA at Lampeter are Don Welk, crop production proficiency winner and recipient of DeKalb Award; and Michelle Dean, beef production proficiency winner and recipient of the Lancaster County Banker’s Award. BY JACK HURLEY ANNVILLE It was a “four star” night at the Little Dutchmen FFA’s 24th Annual Parent- Member Banquet held at Annville- Cleona High School on March 15. With Susan Elliot and Daniel Brandt sharing this year’s Star Greenhand Award, other chapter stars were Star Farmer Karl Brandt, and Star Agribusinessman Todd Fies. Both Star Greenhands were County Creed winners this year with Susan Elliot placing second, and Brandt earning fourth place. Miss Elliot was also reciment of the ninth grade scholarship award Star Farmer Karl Brandt, this year’s sentinel for the Parliamentary Procedure Team, was one of three selected to receive the Keystone Farmer Degree and was honored for Proficiency in dairy production. By evening’s end it was apparent that Chapter president Todd Fies would need more than two hands to carry the numerous plaques, pins, and trophies awarded to him for an outstanding year of FFA service. The recipient of the DeKalb Award, Fies also was selected as a Keystone Farmer, and received two Proficiency Awards in the areas of crop production, and soil and water The senior was also honored for Chapter Leadership, and received both the 12th grade and lop over-all Scholarship Awards During the president’s opening remarks, Fies presented a floral arrangement to his parents in recognition of their support during their son’s busy FFA career Following the banquet held in the high school cafeteria, FFA members along with more than 190 parents and friends adjourned to the auditorium for the balance of the program Proceeding the awards ceremony was a slide show of chapter activities during the past year, and guest speaker Duane Herr, Southcentral Region vice-president, who spoke on the importance of setting goals for achievement Chapter Farmer Degrees - Steve Erb, Dwight Leaman and Mike Mills. Citrus Sales Awards - Fresh men Dave Cnnmon, first, and Recipient of the State and National Proficiency Awards at the Little Dutchman FFA banquet was Daryl Balmer. ihis year’s recipient of the National Proficiency Award was Daryl Balmer, who also took State honors and received the Proficiency Award for public speaking. Other Proficiency Award win ners include; Troy Moyer, ex temporaneous speaking; Steve Reigel, soil and water management; Andrew Baer, placement in ag production; Dale home improvement; and Wayne Smith and Ken Fernsler for fruit and/or vegetable production Other Proficiency awards went to Steve Reigel for diversified Mike Hall; Upper Classmen, Don Welk, first with 258 cases; and Mike Mills. Last year’s Chapter Sweetheart Donna Rohrer passed her crown to Karen Shertzer. Honorary Chapter Farmer Degrees went to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Milligan, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Hayes, Mr. and Mrs. Don Welk and Parke Lefever livestock; Tim Elliot and Tom Inman, crop production; Frank Shuey and David Wenger, ag mechanics; Kimberly Moyer, swine production; Paul Ixmgenecker, fish and/or wildlife; Tim Elliot, poultry production; and Lynn Schwenk, dairy/beef.
