he mentioned that Pennsylvania is
in competition with the Sun Belt
States for certain products But,
according to Sen Wenger,
agriculture is different from in
dustry
"Agriculture is somewhat dif
ferent in that given a fair op
portunity in fair competition, it can
compete," he said.
Sen. Wenger quoted from
William Penn’s explanation of
Pennsylvania as a "holy ex
periment.”
‘ I would suggest today that that
experiment is still going on and
that agriculture will continue to be
at the heart of that experiment,”
he said
Concluding Tuesday’s program
was Dieter Kneg, editor of Farm
shine, who told the crowd,
'Agriculture can honestly be
called the backbone of our free
enterprise system ”
Given certificates of ap
preciation by Penrose Hallowed
were the Pennsylvania Grange,
the Pa Farmers’ Union and the
Pa. Farmer’s Association.
Tuesday’s luncheort also
featured several Pa commodity
queens, one of which was Tammy
Zimmerman, Pa. Potato Queen
and one of the 10 finalists in the
recent Miss Agriculture contest.

York honors Ag Day baby
YOHK Adnanne Burhans,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William
Burhans, Stewartstown R 3, is
York’s 1984 Ag Day Baby.
The infant, born at York Hospital
at 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday, was the
first baby born in York on National
Agriculture Day, celebrated an
nually on the first day of Spring.
As York’s official Ag Day Baby,
Adnanne was presented a selec
tion of York County farm com
modities and gift certificates for
agricultural products County
extension agent Tony Dobrosky
made the Ag Baby presentation on
behalf of York’s farming com
munity.
