Three generations of the founding family are active in the
management of Peterman Farm Equipment Inc., of Carlisle.
Peterman pioneers
no-till
It wasn’t long after Raymond
Peterman began his Carlisle-based
tractor dealership in 1948, that he
saw a need for a more complete
farm equipment line.
By early 1955, Peterman Farm
Equipment, located at 225 York
Road, had acquired an Allis-
Chalmers dealership, enabling the
company to offer an extensive line
in the fast growing tractor and
Ullage business.
Since its post-war beginnings,
Peterman Farm Equipment, Inc.,
has been a progressive force on the
Cumberland County agricultural
scene, and a pioneer in the
promotion of the no-till concept
during the late 1960’5.
It was during the same decade
that Ray’s son Ralph entered the
business, with the company’s
continued growth resulting in an
addition to the shop area during
the 1960’5.
Located in Cecilton Md., Sawyer Bros, serves Maryland and
Northern Delaware with the full line of A-C Farm, and lawn
and garden products.
Sawyer Bros.
serves Cecilton, Md.
It was 27 years ago when John
Nafzinger began serving the
Cecilton, Maryland, area with A-C
equipment and service from his
farm. His enterprise quickly
outgrew the farm, and Nafzinger
moved the UC Farm Store seven
miles to its present location along
Route 213, south of Cecilton.
The dealership continued to
prosper with additions to the shop
and parts area built in 1963, 73,
and again in 76
In January of 1978, LJC became
Sawyer Bros , Inc., with brothers
Jerry and Jay Sawyer purchasing
the company from Mr. Nafzinger.
No strangers to the Allis-Chalmers
line, Jerry came to the Cecilton
in Cumberland
Once again success led to ex
pansion during the early 1980’s
with modernization of the exterior,
and the enlargement of the
showroom area.
Peterman Farm Equipment
continues its tradition of family
ownership with Ralph’s son David
coming on board as a vice
president of the corporation. The
company’s founder, Raymond,
also serves as a vice-president,
with Ralph acting as president.
Other key Peterman personnel
include Ralph’s wife, Lois
Peterman, as secretary, Larry
Wert in sales, and Gilson Marpo in
the parts department.
A 1981 Circle of Honor winner,
Peterman Farm Equipment, Inc.,
is dedicated to providing the
farmer with a full line of quality
Allis-Chalmers equipment and
service.
dealership wiui aeven years ex
perience as an A-C sales manager
in Columbus, Ohio, and his brother
had previously logged two years as
an A-C district manager for
Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
With nine employees, Sawyer
Bros, currently serves Maryland
and northern Delaware with the
full line of A-C farm, as well as
lawn and garden equipment
Though combine sales and
service to the area’s corn and
soybean growers account for a
large percentage of the company’s
business, Jay Sawyer points with
pride to their customers coming
long distanced from points, such as
northern New Jersey and Virginia,
to deal with Sawyer Bros., Inc.
