Bathing Suit Season Ahead NEWARK, Del. - Now that warm weather is on the way, thoughts turn to the great out doors, sunshine, beach blankets, and yes, bathing suits. Is imagining yourself in last year’s suit enough to make you want to move to Alaska? Hearty winter appetities and lack of exercise have taken their toll on many a figure. If yours is among them, don’t fret Start now and you can lose that spare tire by summer, says Karen Steiger, a University of Delaware dietetics student working with Extension EFNEP Coordinator Marguerite Krackhardt Doctors and dietitians recom mend a slow, gradual weight loss of one to two pounds per week. Since on pound of fat equals 3,500 calories of energy, you need to burn 3,500 to 7,000 extra calories each week to lose one or two pounds. To burn up that energy you can either decrease your daily food instake by 500 to 1,00 calories, increase your daily activity by 500 to 1,000 calories, or combine the two approaches. Decreasing your food intake by 500 calories isn’t too hard, Steiger says. It just takes some will power and willingness to change. Start paying attention to the little extras you may eat without thinking. For instance, five tablespoons of butter, 11 tablespoons of sugar, or 10 chocolate chip cookies each add up to 500 calories. You could eliminate 500 calories in one day by doing without three tablespoons of sugar in your coffee and cereal, two tablespoons of butter on your toast and potato, and the three cookies you usually have before bed. On the exercise side, you could burn up your 500 calories with 110 minutes of slow bicycling (5.5 mph); 75 minutes of tennis; 45 to 100 minutes of swimming (depending on your speed); or walking 6V4 miles in 125 minutes. Because it’s hard to cut out all the foods you love, and just as hard to find two free hours for bicycling every day, Steiger says a com bination of calorie reduction and exercise makes sense. You could cut out two tablespoons of sugar (from coffee or grapefruit) one tablespoon of butter (from toast or vegetables) and one cookie or other snack or dessert, then go out walking for an hour with a friend. Do this every day for a week and you’ve said goodbye to your first pound. If you need a strict weight loss regime to follow, you’ll find plenty to chose from. Just be sure to pick a sensible plan. Steiger offers these guidelines- DO choose a long-term plan. Slow, gradual weight loss is safest and most effective. DO talk to your doctor before starting any serious weight loss program, especially if it involves strenous exercise or a loss of more than 10 pounds. A phone call may be all you need to get his or her okay. DO choose a balanced diet, with foods from all four food groups plus fats and oils.
