Now is a good time to start
planning for the 1984 Wayne
County 4-H and FFA Market Hog
Feeding Project.
This project is open to all 4-H
members between the ages of eight
and 19 and all FFA members
enrolled m an area vocational
agriculture program.
This 4-H and FFA project will
begin in April when the member
takes delivery of two feeder pigs
weighing between 35 and 45 pounds
a piece. Crossbred feeder pigs
make very good market hog
projects and are efficient con
verters of feed to lean, red meat.
Some of the requirements
needed for this project include; a
sturdy shed or barn with adequate
room for two hogs, adequate
ventilation during the summer
months or a source of shade, a
wood or metal trough for feed, a
container for water or a self
waterer, a source of bedding to
keep the hogs clean and dry and a
source of good, high quality feed.

Young feeder pigs may also need
some special care if the weather is
cold during April. This might in
clude a source of supplemental
heat plus extra bedding.
Once the feeder pigs have ad
justed to their facilities the project
members main concern is to feed
the hogs with plenty of high quality
feed. The average market hog will
consume at least 600 pounds of feed
in order to reach a market weight
of 200 pounds or more. Market hogs
must weigh at least 165 pounds in
order to participate in the Junior
Livestock Sale.
Growing feeder pigs should be
treated for internal and external
parasites several times during this
feeding period. Information on
materials to use to eliminate these
parasites can be obtained by
contacting the Wayne County
Extension Office.
During the summer months the
4-H of FFA member will have to
work at fitting the hogs and also
training them to respond to a

FFA hog showmanship and fitting
meeting will be held in July to help
the project members learn these
important skills.
One of the highlights of this
project is exhibiting the market
hogs at the Wayne County Fair.
The 4-H or FFA member will
exhibit both market hogs in the
Wayne County Junior Market Hog
Show. All of the market hogs are
exhibited and judged according to
different weight classes. The
project members also compete in
their own age group for
showmanship and fitting honors.
The other highlight for members
in this project is at the Junior
Livestock Sale. This sale, which is
held on Saturday evening of the
Wayne County Fair, gives the 4-H
member an opportunity to sell
their high quality meat animals to
interested buyers.
Market hog project members
must also keep a record of all
expenses in raising the market
hogs. Expenses would include cost

raising the market hogs.
The Wayne County Extension
Office is currently accepting or
ders for 35 to 45 pound feeder pigs
to be used as market hog projects.
The deadline for ordering project
feeder pigs from the Extension
Office is March 26th.
The delivery date on these feeder
pigs will be between April 5 and
April 16. 4-H or FFA members
ordering feeder pigs will be asked
to pay a $5O deposit on each pig
ordered. The actual price on each
feeder pig will be determined when
they are nicked up and delivered to
