QUARRYVILLE - Ihe annual
Solanco FFA Parent-Member
Banquet and Awards Program was
held March 8 at Solanco High
School with approximately 290
members, parents and guests
attending.
The Greenhand Degree was
awarded to 28 first-year members
and the Chapter Degree went to 17
second-year members who
completed the requirements for
the degree. The Lancaster County
Red Rose Degree was presented to
Lester Davis, Tracy Landis, Kris
Esbenshade, Kenneth Trout and
Fritz Frey. Keystone Degrees
were presented to Jamie Frey,
Bruce Cantey, Mark Welk, Frank
Livestock Judging
Practices Scheduled
HONESDALE Wayne County
4-H livestock project members and
others interested in learning about
hogs, sheep and beef will have an
opportunity to learn this skill at
some upcoming 4-H livestock
judging practice sessions.
These practice sessions will
begin in Wayne County during
March and early April at area
livestock farms.
The first judging meeting will be
held March 20 at 8 p.m. at the
Clyde and Dons Mead Farm,
located at Creamton Corners
Classes of market lambs and
breeding ewes will be judged at
this meeting.
The second meeting is scheduled
for March 28 at 8 p.m. at the Ernie
and Mary Rutledge Farm, located
near Tyler Hill. Classes of market
Joshua Chou and Kevin McFall,
members of the Herpetology 4-H
Club, were guest speakers at the
March meeting of the Busy
Beavers 4-H Prep Club. Members
were able to feel and touch a

The third meeting will be held
April 4, at 8 p.m. at the Wayne
County Extension Office, Court
house, Honesdale. At this meeting,
judging of market and breeding
hogs will be reviewed. A hog
picture judging contest will also be
used at this session.
Wayne County 4-H livestock
members and other 4-H members
interested in judging livestock will
have an opportunity to participate
in the annual Block and Bridle
Club’s Livestock Judging Contest.
This contest is scheduled for April
7 at the Penn State University Beef
and Sheep Center.

earned him the opportunity to
compete in the state Tractor
Driving Contest this summer.
Randy, son of Mr. and Mrs
Mark Risser R 1 Holtwood, has beef
finishing, swine fattening and
rabbits as projects. Additional
projects in field crops are also
planned. Randy placed first in the
county F'FA Creed Contest and will
next participate in the Area Creed
Contest this spring. Both students
have exhibited outstanding
scholarship achievement in all
facets of the agriculture program.
John Riley was named Star
Chapter Farmer. He is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. John Riley Rl,
Nottingham. His projects have
included beef finishing and work
experience. He is currently ser
ving as Chapter Chaplain.
Star Red Rose Farmer was
awarded to Fritz Frey, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Frey, R 2,
Quarryville. Fritz is currently
serving as chapter student ad
visor. His projects have included
beef breeding, beef finishing and
corn. Fritz has participated in
state and national livestock juding

Lancaster Bone Fertilizer Inc. of
Quarryville presented the Star
Keystone Farmer Award to Jamie
Frey Jamie has been active in the
FFA throughout her four years in
high school having served as
chapter secretary and currently
serving as chapter president and
county secretary. In previous
years, Jamie has been Solanco
Star Greenhand and Star Chapter
Farmer as well as County Star Red
Rose Farmer. Her projects have
included greenhouse production,
beef finishing and corn. This past
year, she was selected as Teen of
the Week by Lancaster
Newspapers Inc.
George Eager, Rl, Quarryville,
received the Honorary Chapter
Farmer Degree for his dedication
to those students who show dairy
cattle at regional and state shows.
