The 1983 Dairy Judging Team made history for Berks County and Pennsylvania with
, their judging skill. They are; Harold Dietrich, Hamburg; Charles Seidel, Lenhartsville;
Patricia Dreisbach, Hamburg; and Todd Miller, Hamburg.
Dairy Judging Team Honored at Banquet

FLEETWOOD Berks County
honored its outstanding 4-H
achievers March 2 at the Fleet
wood Grange Hall during the
annual awards banquet of the
Berks County 4-H Dairy Clubs.
Families and 4-Hers from the five
county clubs filled the hall as “cow
talk” continued throughout the
evening.
“We’re real proud of this
group,” Carl Brown announced.
He referred to the Dairy Judging
team of Harold Dietrich, Patti
Dreisbach, Todd Miller, and
Charles Seidel who were each
honored with an individual plaque
for placing first in Pennsylvania
and first in the All American
contests. This was the first time
that Pennsylvania had won at this
level. Not only was this team best
over 18 states at the Eastern
National, they also were best in
oral reasons. Although the first
plaque the team won took some
luck, Brown stated, the oral
reasons award took a lot of
practice.
Debbie Price was also honored
for her receiving the $lOOO
scholarship for her 4-H dairy goat
project. Debbie is currently at
tending Penn State with hopes of a
career in veterinary medicine.
Project book and blueform
winners were also honored. In the 8
to 9-year age group, Michelle
Troutman, Rl, Richland, from the
Stouchsburg club took the blue
ribbon. In the 10 to 11-year age
group Scott Youse, R 2, Oley, from
Eastern Berks, took first
lace. Heidi Schlegel, R 3, Boyer
town, from the Eastern Berks
Club, took first place for 12 to 13
years of age. Doris Stump, R 3,
Bernville, from Western Berks
took the blue for 14 to 15-year-old.
Debbie Price, R 2, Douglassville,
from Eastern Berks, received first
for 16 to 17-year-olds and Jan
Adam, R 2, Hamburg, from the
VirginviUe club, took the blue for
18 to 19-year olds.
Blue from winners included: 10
to 11 years - Lisa Krick, Rl,
Lenhartsville, Virginville Club; 12-
year-olds - Tammy Balthaser, Rl,
Bemville, Western Berks Club; 13-
year-olds - Steve Rihrbach,
Shoemakersville, Virginville Club;
14 to 15-year-olds - Mark Price, R 2,
Douglassville, Eastern Berks club,
16 to 17-year-olds - Debbie Price,
R 2, Douglassville, Eastern Berks
Club; 18-year-old - Jan Adam, R 2,
Hamburg, Virginville Club.
This year a new contest was also
initiated. Awards were given for
the best secretary and treasurer’s
books. Tammy Balthaser, Rl,
Farmers wives pair off for their turn at the questions during
a Family Feud game during the Berks Co. 4-H Dairy Banquet.
Bernville, had the best secretary’s
book and Debbie Price won honors
for the best treasurer’s book.
LaVerne Moser, Bally, an
nounced the formation of a new
group of dairy promoters within
the county. Called the
Southeastern Dairy Promoters,
this newly formed group is seeking
support from local dairymen to
buy advertising tune on radio to
sell milk.
“Right here at home, let’s get
those sales going. Let’s help
ourselves from the bottom up,”
Mrs. Moser stated.
For approximately $2O, a
dairyman can support the group
and have his name announced
after the promotion on the radio.

To enliven the banquet and test
their own knowledge, the 4-H clubs
selected two Berks dairy families
to compete in the adaptation of the
“Family Feud Game”, popular on
television. Labeled the “Farmer
Feud”, the families of Sandy
Moser, Bally, and Tammy
Balthaser, Bemville, pitted their
dairy knowledge against each
other.
Berks County Dairy Princess,
Connie Ohlmger, Mohrsville, and
the National Jersey Jug Queen,
Patricia Dreisbach, Hamburg,
were also on hand to present the
awards. The awards were spon
sored by more than 20 county
businesses, and the banquet was
catered by the Fleetwood Grange.
