A34—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 17,1984 Northwest Breeders honor BY BARB RADER Staff Correspondent COCHRANTON - Nancy Jo Mitrich and Kevin Field were honored as the 1983 Outstanding Girl and Boy at the Northwest Penna. Ayrshire Breeders annual spring meeting last Saturday. The youths were awarded $5O savings bonds from the local club. Presenting the awards was Debbie Lyons, youth program director of the club. She noted that the two youths had devoted a lot of time and effort in putting their scrap books together, and each had won on the state competition level. Lyons noted this was the first year for the awards, which will be continued next year. Any youth who is a junior Ayrshire member and resides in any of the following counties, Butler, Crawford, Erie, Mercer, Lawrence, Beaver, Warren, Venango or McKean, may compete in the contest. Outstanding Boy and Girl. Vice President Barbara Rader conducted the business meeting in absence of the president. The local club will be selling fund-raising chances on $lOO and $5O to be drawn on Sept. 8 at the Northwest District 4-H Show. During Crawford County Fair, the club will sponsor one of the plaques to be given to the premier exhibitor and breeder. This was started a year ago and proven to be quite successful with the color breeds. Reminders of up-coming sales and dates were given. Con signments were also noted as needed for the Penna. Spring Calf and Heifer Sale on April 21 at Bedford and for the All-Breed Calf Sale April 28 at Meadville. Breeders are to keep in mind the state sale date on Sept. 25 at the Farm Show Complex during All- American Week. Several members of the club are also planning to attend the National Ayrshire Convention and Sale in Columbus, Oh. April 3-6. Junior members have been en couraged to attend for the first Junior Dairy Bowl Quiz to be held as part of the youth program. It was also noted their will be some northwestern Ayrshires going through the sale ring April 6. Club members will also be serving on various committees for the 1986 National Ayrshire Con vention. Ideas and suggestions should be kept in mind for this event. July 8 was selected for the an nual picnic and hosts will be Harold and Barbara Rader and family of Connoquenessing (Butler County).
