Animal biopsies improved
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Researchers at the University of
Maryland’s Agricultural Ex
periment Station (UMAES) have
developed a new biopsy method
that should allow veterinarians to
examine live animal tissue without
using major surgery.
The procedure involves so little
trauma to the animal, say the
researchers, that periodic and
repeated biopsies at intervals as
short as four weeks are possible.
“This procedure, which we call a

LANCASTER -
Lancaster County is one
of 23 counties in
Maryland, Penn
sylvania and Delaware
receiving special help
frbm the U.S. Depart
ment of Agriculture for
controlling soil erosion.
A new 11M> minute slide
show, explaining the
problem and looking at
solutions in the Mason-
Dixon Erosion Control
area, is now available
for showing to farm and
civic groups.
“Soil erosion is
threatening the long
term productivity of
some of our best far
mland,” says Clifford
Bienko, Soil Con
servation Service. “We
are targeting special
technical and cost-share
assistance to areas that
have critical erosion
problems”.
According to Bienko,
soil loss on cropland in
the target area
averages about 18 tons
per acre annually.
That’s about five times
greater than scientists
consider allowable. Not
only is this an economic
loss for farmers, it also
creates a water quality
problem. Sediment, and
the nutrients attached to
it, has been identified as
one of the major sources
of nonpoint pollution to
the Cheasapeake Bay.
Bienko says the
Mason-Dixon slide show
is available free, on
loan, to farm, civic and
school groups. To

‘nondestructive’ biopsy method,
should become an important ad
dition to our diagnostic and
research arsenal,” says Dr.
Theodore H. Belling, Jr., a visiting
associate professor with Maryland
and Virginia’s Regional College of
Veterinary Medicine at
Maryland’s College Park campus.
Belling and Maryland assistant
professor Dr. Michael J. Glade
were principal investigators on the
UMAES research project.
Belling and Glade said they
developed the procedure so they
could study abnormalities in
cartilage growth in young
thoroughbred horses.

many young thoroughbreds suffer
leg deformities that are the result
of abnormalities in leg cartilage
growth,” Dr. Belling says.
“If we understand how these
abnormalities come about, we may
be able to develop way to prevent
them,” he says.
“Before we can understand
these abnormalities, though, we
have to have some way to examine
the abnormal tissues.
“This procedure allows us to do
so with a minimum amount of
discomfort to the animal and little
inconvenience to a practicing
veterinarian,” adds Belling.
Up to now, techniques available
to obtain and study living tissue in
live animals were limited, and
ofter required major surgery.
Producers can spray Permectrin
II or 25% Wettable Powder on
livestock to control face flies, horn
flies, horseflies, stable flies,
mosquitoes, lice, mites, fleas and
ticks on animals. Both products
can also be used on premise
surfaces to control house flies,
stable flies, spiders, mosquitoes,
and fleas.
Permectrin II provides longer
residual control on premises than
many other insect sprays. This
results in fewer applications and
less cost for the producer. In ad
dition, the product’s flexible
' dilution rates adapt to a variety of
animal and premise uses.
