Butler honors dealers
Butler Livestock Systems recently honored two area
dealers for outstanding participation in the company’s
marketing programs, special effort and service to customers.
Selection for the honor is made by each Butler territory
manager, in top photo, Bucky Gladhill, right of Gladhill
Tractor Mart, Frederick, Md., receives award from Don Clark,
territory manager; and in bottom photo, John Swope, right, of
J.A. Swope Silo Equipment, Inc., Myerstown, receives award
from Chuck Aungst, territory manager.
The presentations took place at the firm’s International
Dealer Meeting recently in Lake Geneva, Wise. It marked the
first combined dealer meeting of the former Jamesway and
Oswalt Divisions which merged last August into Butler
Livestock Systems.

Bergland to speak Friday
Bergland, who served as U.S.
Agriculture Secretary under
President Jimmy Carter, is slated
to become the new chief executive
officer of the National Rural
Electric Cooperative Association
(NRECA) next month.
A former Minnesota farmer,
Bergland became chairman of that
state’s ASCS in 1961 and moved to
Washington D.C. two years later to
become Midwest Area Director for
ASCS. He was elected to Congress
representing his home state’s 7th
Congressional District in 1970 and
served in the U.S. House until he
was picked to head USDA in 1977.

prices and increase farmers’
marketing options. In 1979,
Secretary Bergland instituted a
major study into changes affecting
agriculture since World War 11.
Known as the “Structure of
Agriculture” report, it set an
agenda of goals to be pursued in
American agriculture in the
future.
Prior to his selection for the
NRECA post, Bergland had served
as President of the Farmland
World Trade, a subsidiary of
Farmland Industries, the nation’s
largest farmer-cooperative,
headquartered in Kansas City, Mo.
In this position he traveled ex
tensively to develop long-term
farm markets.
