ministering diuretics or fluid
reduction medications. Some types
of diuretics, however will reduce
the cow’s appetite.
Adams recommends main
taining the dry cow feed ration
right up to freshening, when grain
can be upped to one percent of
body weight, then gradually in
creased as the cow will take it.
Dry matter needs for the first
two weeks of freshening are
critical and should be fed at the
level of about 2.2 percent of body
weight. Overfeeding of grains or
concentrates lessens the cow’s
appetite for forages and cuts her
intake of necessary dry matter.
While dry cows should not have a
steady diet of hay nearly void of
nutrient value, it is just as unwise,
says Adams, to feed top grade
alfalfa hay. Best quality alfalfa
hay can be too rich in nutrients,
and can lead to problems with
displaced abomasums, or twisted
stomachs, following calving.
Dairymen should avoid using the
same box stall areas for calving
and for dry cow care. An estimated
80 percent of all mastitis cases can
be traced back to the dry period,
and under the stress of calving, a
cow’s reproductive and mammary
systems can readily pick up
bacteria from dry cows housed
previously in the same area.
As calving is imminent. Adams
urges dairymen to wash and
