WEST CHESTER - "Identify
the problems. Then, provide
solutions to the problems”,
Pownall Jones, Toughkenamon,
Director of the Chester County
Conservation District, suggested
to his fellow directors at their
monthly meeting last week in West
Chester.
The Directors were responding
to pollution problems in
Chesapeake Bay, allegedly caused
by agriculture. A five-year, multi
million dollar, tax-producer
funded study points the finger at
agriculture for causing a decrease
in Bay fish harvests. The study
says that nutrients from fertilizer,
manure and pesticides from crop
production have been major
contributors to Bay pollution.
Jenny Russell, Lewisville, Vice
Chairman, is arranging a public
information meeting for the
Chester County portion of the Bay
watershed. “Initial plans for the
meeting include an overview of
Bay problems and suggested
solutions. Various government
proposals, restrictions and
programs will be summerized”,
shd said. “Landowners in the Bay
watershed will be exposed to the
organized effort being assembled
New carrot hybrid
MADISON, Wis. A new carrot
hybrid, called A Plus, providing
both better flavor and more
nutrition, is ready for home gar
deners and commercial production
this spring.
In taste panel evaluations, A
Plus was preferred over eight
commercial hybrids with which it
was compared, said horticulturist
Clinton E. Peterson of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture at the
University of Wisconsin’s Madison
campus.
USDA’s Agricultural Research
Service scientists found that the
new carrot has about 76 percent
more carotene than the variety
most widely grown in California.
Philipp W. Simon, Agricultural
Research Service plant geneticist
at Madison, conducted the taste
panel and laboratory analyses.
