Ag Day events listed
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A
variety of Agriculture Day ac
tivities - led by Secretary of
Agriculture John R. Block,
honorary chairman of the national
observance, and his wife, Sue - will
be conducted in Washington, D.C.,
on March 20 by the National
Ariculture Day Steering Com
mittee.
Agriculture Day, the first day of
spring, has been authorized as an
official national observance every
year since 1981, by a joint
resolution of Congress and a
presidential proclamation. It was
first celebrated in 1973 and has
grown since then to include
thousands of events at the state
and community level nationwide.
Mrs. Block will host a mid
morning news conference and
reception March 20 for the new
“Miss Agriculture” at the
Department of Agriculture.
The finalists will be interviewed
March 16, the start of Agriculture
Week, by Christina M. Wilson,
Secretary Block’s public-liaison
assistant; Marsha Herndon of the
American Farm Bureau
Federation; Laura Heuser, a
Michigan farm wife; James
Robertson, Monsanto Co., and Jam
Westmoreland, Pfizer, Inc.
Secretary Block will attend and
speak at a National Press Club
luncheon March 20, beginning with
a reception at noon.
The evening of the 20th, mem
bers of Congress and the Cabinet,
along with state and national
agricultural organization leaders,
will attend a “Taste of the Country”
barbeque/reception on the patio at
the USDA Administration
Building, featuring both Texas
and North Carolina- style bar
beque and an array of other foods
to be enjoyed while the “Blue
grass Bureaucrats” band en
tertains. Breads for the reception
are being contributed by U.S.
Wheat Associates; potato chips
and other snacks, by Frito-Lay,
Inc., and flowers, through
SAF/The Center for Commercial
Floriculture.
