John Yocum, from the Penn
Slate University research farm in
told farmers it is
important to use proper quantities
of fertilizer, especially in the seed
beds.
With too much fertilizer, he said,
'what happens is you burn those
little plants up.”
He recommended using 1 to l : /2
pounds of com starter on a 50-
square foot bed and 12 pounds of a
6-feet by 100-feet bed.
“You don’t need a tremendous
amount of fertilizer,” he said,
adding that those amounts should
be followed with other applications
during the growing season.
Yocum advised farmers to have
their soil tested so they will know
what amounts of fertilizer to use.
While manure provides many
nutrients to the soil, Yocum said
different manure contains dif
ferent quantities of vital nutrients.
He said chicken manure should

not be used on tobacco because it
contains such a high percentage of
nitrogen that it is impossible to
spread it thinly enough. Only about
two tons per acre are needed.
When the manure is in
corporated into the soil also affects
the amount of nitrogen the soil
absorbs, Yocum said. If the
manure is plowed under within 48
hours only 50 percent of the
nitrogen will be available the first
year.
If it is incorporated within two
days, only 35 percent will be
available. The percentages con
tinue to decrease with longer time
periods, Yocum said.
Yocum also stressed that far
mers should not buy their plants
out of state because many of the
imported plants carry diseases
such as black shank and bacterial
wilt.
“Many have diseases we don’t
want in Lancaster County,” he
said.

have been showing up in in

warned farmers to “be aware of
those hornworms” that hide un

Bill Brubaker warned the
growers about increasing
phosphorus levels that are starting
to show up in Lancaster County
wells.
“We’ve got to watch the manure

Following the speaker’s

were given an opportunity to ask

out farrowing and allows for
grouping more routine activities
such as vaccinating, tail docking
and clipping needle teeth.”
It is important to maintain up-to
date records on each animal so the
injection can be given at the proper
time.
“Field studies show that
Lutalyse effectively induces
farrowing in sows and gilts known
to be 111 to 113 days into gestation.
When Lutalyse was administered
at the proper level of 2 ml, the time
from injection until parturition
averaged 29 hours, while the
controls showed 78 hours. All
treated sows have farrowed within
72 hours after the injection,
whereas it required 144 hours for
all control sows to farrow,” reports
Dr. Van Buren.
