    Why February?
BY KIMBERLY HERR
Now that the last Saturday m
February has finally arrived - not
a minute too soon in my opinion -1
have but one question. Why, why,
why do they add an extra day to
February?
An additional day would be
lovely in May, September or
December, maybe even January,
but why February, that scrawny
little month, the runt of the year?
Now, before you think I’m being
unduly harsh, let’s reflect back on
what this month had to offer.
It got off to a dismal start when
that nasty little groundhog
predicted we would have six more
weeks of winter. Hearing his
wintry forecast on the way to work
that morning I wondered if it was
possible for home editors to
hibernate for six weeks without
being missed. I decided it was not.
Soon after recovering from the
groundhog’s announcement, 1 was
overcome with Valentine’s Day
blues.
I received two lovely boxes of
candy the week before Valentine’s
Day from my parents and a
friend’s parents, which was
wonderful, but my waistline cried
out for mercy and I found the
fashions in shops for full figures
were looking more and more like
something I should buy for spring.
My co-workers, usually so easy
to work with, seemed to delight in
ribbing me about the fact that no
flowers arrived for me on that
special day. Our editor did sur-

And on the flip side of receiving
is giving, which seemed to over
whelm me this year as I had
Christmas all over again. Family
and friends loved this generous
side of me, but my checkbook will
never be the same.
My father sports a brand new tie
tack, my mother’s ears are
adorned with gold earrings, my
brother - a poor college student -
has a few extra dollars in his
pocket and a friend has cologne
that smells so wonderful that he
can only wear it when he’s with
me. But the pleasure of giving was
only a brief, bright spot.
Believe or not, the month got
worse.
Two days after Valentine’s Day
as I was driving home from work I
was attacked by an unusual tired
feeling.
Spending the weekend sipping
ginger ale and eating chicken
broth was just about what I ex
pected for this dark, little month
that seemed to go on and on.
Then just when I was feeling
better, my father broke the news
that he and millions of other people
across the country had off on
Monday for President’s Day.
But, did I? Of course not,
because any journalist worth her
typewriter knows that vacation or
not, people still want their paper

staff and probably for many of you,
Monday was just another day.
A call from my father Monday
reminding me that he was having a
lovely vacation day, did not make
the beginning of my week any
brighter.
But, at the risk of sounding like a
chronic complamer, there is more.
Yesterday, the Lancaster
Farming staff said goodbye to
Irish Williams, our staff reporter,
covering many of the dairy events
during the past year. We’ll all miss
her dairy expertise and I’ll miss
her friendship in the office.
After today, there will be four
more days left of this short month

hear another complaint from me
about February as I plan to think
happy thoughts and count the
hours, minutes, seconds until the
first day of March.
Attributing my achiness to not
getting enough sleep, I made two
delicious venison fillets for dinner
and went to bed. The deer that I ate
that night had been killed by a

nothing to do with its death - but,
somehow that deer must have
gotten confused and decided to
take its revenge out on me.
My achiness apparently had
nothing to do with being tired and
everything to do with the flu. And
so the venison spent the night
raging in my stomach, making me
promise never to hunt or even
write a column about hunting
again
throughout the country. Forms of
recreation, entertainment and a
mail order section are also in
cluded.
Funds raised through the sales of
these books will be given to State
and County 4-H programs. County
