all new steer show, the 1984 Cer
tified Angus Steer Classic, have
been released by the American
Angus Association.
The show, set for July 8-10 in
Columbus, Ohio, will place equal
emphasis on structure and
soundness (live placing) and on
carcass quality, and retail yield
(carcass placing). It is open only to
steers that are the produce of
registered Angus taws and bulls
and will be held in conjunction with
the 1984 National Junior Angus

“This new show is designed to
educate young cattle producers in
the requirements for an excellent
beef steer,” said Dick Spader,
executive vice president of the
American Angus Association. “We
want our junior members to start
with steers of known ancestry and
birth dates, then feed them to the
most desirable end point. Finally,
we want them to study the car
casses to see how well they have
done.”

The steers will be shown live on
July 8. Each animal, in addition to
being placed in class, will receive
an overall live index. The next day
the steers will be slaughtered and
evaluated. Each carcass will
receive an index based upon yield
grade, percent retail yield and
quality. The grand championship
overall will be determined by 50
percent live index and 50 percent
carcass index.
To be eligible, steers must be
nominated by May 1, 1984, ac

steer the owner must provide the
steer’s birth date, the registration
number of the sire and dam, the
name and address of the breeder,
the date of purchase, a nose print
of the steer and the name and
address of the owner.
Steers must be calved on or after
January 1,1983 and must meet the
visual requirements for Angus
registration except that animals
with “excessive white” will be
eligible to compete.
The show is open to all junior,
life or regular members of the
American Angus Association who
are at least 9 years old but not
more than 21 years old as of
January 1,1984.
The live steer show judge will be
