Johnstown, Pa 814-266-9721 arwimg, aromwy, rwmry 11, im-Dll Hay quality procedure due March 22 DAVIS, Col. A new, uniform procedure for determining and expressing feeding value of alfalfa hay will be announced in Chicago, D., March 22-23. William C. Templeton, Jr., Chairman of the National Alfalfa Hay Quality Committee, says the procedure will give alfalfa hay producers, dealers, dairymen, cattle feeders, horsemen, and others their first opportunity to utilize a standard, nationally uniform chemical procedure for determining nutritive value of alfalfa hay. Previously, there was no uniformity in the methods used by different states and regions for evaluating the quality of alfalfa hay. Only with knowledge of a hay’s chemical composition can it be utilized most efficiently in livestock feeding operations. The procedure to be announced will also facilitate marketing of alfalfa hay, as sellers and buyers can now use the same basis for placing a value on the hay. The same ap proach can be used with other hays and it is expected the procedure and experiences with alfalfa will serve as a model for other hays in the future. The afternoon and morning meetings, to be held at the O’Hare/Kennedy Holiday Inn, will serve to inform the public, media, and all interested parties of the Committee’s recommendations and to initiate trial of the procedure on a national basis. Speakers will explain sampling and laboratory procedures, im plications for private laboratories, certification of labs, analysis by near-infrared reflectance spec troscopy, estimating digestible dry matter, and visual and physical characteristics. A panel of speakers will discuss marketing and economic implications. The program allows time for questions, discussion, and com ments. More information can be obtained from Vem L.
