After studying at Delaware
Valley College, the Beshore’s
youngest son, Jed, returned to
partnership with his parents in the
family operation. He and his wife,
Sue, have since assumed full reins
of the business, making all the
farm decisions.
“Jed always wanted to be the
farmer and he deserves credit for
where the herd is right now,”
Wayne is quick to emphasize “I
only milk in emergencies.”
Rolling herd average on the 46
registered milkers is 20,200 pounds
of milk and 740 fat. The herd has
been awarded the Progressive
Breeder Registry recognition for
ten years, and three of the out
standing milkers have produced

Merchandising of their

Wayne’s philosphy of quality has
carried through to the crop
production, and in 1965, earned
him the state Grassland Farmer
honor.
Production from the 80 acres of
com and 55 of alfalfa is integrated
into the dairy herd feeding
program, while part of the 25 acres
of wheat goes as cash crop.
Hay comes off early as haylage,
with later cuttings in the mow, and
corn silage refilling storage units
as needed. Due to the summer
drought conditions, some ad
ditional hay has been purchased in
to round out feeding supplies.

Brucellosis-free certificate to State
Agriculture Secretary Penrose
Hallowell at the 113th meeting of
the Pennsylvania Dairymens
Association held recently.
Atwell commended the state and
its 15,500 dairymen for their efforts
in eradicating the disease, but
cautioned that the Brucellosis-free
status could only be maintained
with a strict program of animal
testing and monitoring.
According to Secretary
Hallowell, the state has ap
proximately 4,000 herds on in
dividual test plans, one of the
largest such programs of its kind
in the nation.
“Our dairymen bear the costs of
these programs and are to be
congratulated for the time and
effort they expand,” he said,
noting that the state must be free
of the disease for one year to attain
Brucellosis-free status.
Pennsylvania is a pioneer in
Brucellosis research, entering the
field in 1924. Federal involvement
in the program did not come until
the mid 1930’5.
