Carl Snyder tops Schuylkill DHIA roster

DETURKSVILLE - Carl A.
Farms, Rl, Pitman, stood at the
top of the Schuylkill County DHIA
roster at the recent awards
banquet.
Owned by Carl. Snyder, the 64
registered Holsteins pumped out a
1983 herd average of 21,009 pounds
of milk and 821 pounds of butterf at,
besting the 38 herds in the
association. This herd average for
milk and butterfat, along with the
four other herds who exceeded 700
pounds of fat, helped put Schuylkill
County first in the state in but
terfat, second in protein, and fifth
in milk production.

•This was the first time Carl
Snyder reached the top of the
association. His black and whites
also took the top honors in the
individual cow production awards.
“Dori” with 33,529 pounds milk
and 1,602 pounds fat earned her
owner the highest award in both
milk and fat production. Carl A.
Farms bovines also placed third
and fourth in milk production and
fourth in fat production in the
individual cow awards.
This marked the first year that
the 1,811 cows enrolled on DHIA in
the county topped the 16,000 pound

county average is 16,242 pounds
milk with 610 pounds fat.
The top five herds received
ribbons for 700 pounds plus of
butterfat. In addition to Carl A.
Farms, they included Paul and
Ken Wagner, Rl, Tamaqua with 58
Holsteins averaging 20,587 milk
and 752 fat; Brian Ruch, Rl, An
dreas, with 27 Holsteins averaging
18,381 milk and 715 fat; Miller and
Rex, Inc., Rl, Andreas, with 34
Holsteins averaging 18,376 milk
and 711 fat; and Heisler Brothers,
Rl, Tamaqua, with 68 Holsteins
averaging 18,759 milk and 703 fat.
There were also six herds
recognized for over 600 pounds of
protein. They included Carl A.
Farms with 685 pounds; Bruce
Leatherman, Rl,Tamaqua, with
660 pounds; Paul and Ken Wagner,
with 657 pounds; Heisler Brothers
with 614 pounds; Melvin Stoltfus,
Rl, Hegins, with 613 pounds; and
Snyder Brothers, Rl, Pitman, with
601 pounds.
The annual meeting and awards
banquet was held at the Red Lion
Inn, Deturksville, on Wednesday,
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S.
Department of Agriculture has
issued county loan and purchase
rates for 1984-crop wheat based on
the national average rate of $3.30
per bushel for No. 1 grade wheat
announced last August.

Jan 18. Officials were pleased with
the turnout in spite of the bad
weather. New directors were
elected with Franklin Troxell, Rl,
Andreas, being re-elected, and
John Leatherman, Rl, Tamaqua,
and James Hepler, Pitman,
elected to new terms.
After the elections and awards,
Larry Specht, Penn State, ex
plained the genetic base changes.

prices received by farmers,
transportation costs and
production and consumption
trends, according to C. Hoke
Leggett, associate administrator
of USDA’s Agricultural
Stablilization and Conservation
Service.
