HARRISBURG Totaled stocks
of potatoes stored in Pennsylvania
on January 1, 1984 were 2,200,000
hundredweight, 44 percent less
than a year ago according to the
Pennsylvania Crop and Livestock
Reporting Service. Of this amount,
1,025,000 cwt. or 47 percent of total
stocks were stored in processors’
facilities.
Stocks are defined as the
quantity remaining in storage for
all purposes and uses, including
shrinkage and waste and other
losses that occur after the date of
each report. Stocks may also in
clude potatoes produced in other

January 1, 1984 potato stocks
totaled an estimated 161 million
cwt. for the 15 states in the stocks
program, down ten percent from a
year ago and two percent from the
1982 stocks. By variety, potatoes
were 70 percent russet; 26 percent
white; and 4 percent red, based on
data from the 11 objective yield
states. The storage total accounted
for 58 percent of fall potato
production compared with 60
percent a year ago.
