HOUSING AND
HOME EQUIPMENT
LANCASTER To a farmer,
manure can be a source of
valuable plant nutrients, a disposal
headache, or a potential pollutant
How he views it depends largely
upon the facilities and equipment
he has to handle it, and how well he
utilizes it.
Are you considering a swine or
dairy manure storage and han
dling system to replace the chore
of too frequent hauling’ - or to cut
down on nutrient losses, or to
reduce fertilizer purchases,
pollution, and problems with flies
and odors’ Are you considering
some of the newer gravity con
cepts for handling manure’ If so,
you should be planning ahead and
learning as much as possible now,
before making a decision.
Three manure management
meetings will be conducted by the
Penn State Extension Service
throughout southeastern Penn
sylvania from 9-00 a.m. to 3 00
p.m. as follows:
January 31 - Farm and Home
Center, I>ancaster No reservations
needed. Lunch tickets available till

February 2 - Friendship Fire
Hall, Lebanon For registration

tension Agent.
Exhibits will be present. The

discussions on manure storage and
handling systlems. The afternoon

manure to get the greatest benefits
from it and to minimize pollution.

Manure sessions planned
A typical dairy cow produces
about 20 tons of manure per year
which contain about 200-60-100
pounds of N-P205-K2O. If properly
utilized, aobut $5O worth of these
nutrients are available to crops the
first year, and additional nutrients
and benefits continue to be
available in subsequent years.
Most farmers don’t realize that
often more nutrients come onto the
farm in the form of purchased feed
than from purchased fertilizer
About 75% of the nutrients in feed
can remain in the manure and be
available for field application. This

is a valuable source of plant
nutrients If ignored or
mismanaged, this can result in
