skiing in the winter, somethng

pointed out that Ken skiied before
she met him and he taught her. Her
youngest child learned when he
was four years old.

Within a few days, we will have
our 36th wedding anniversary.
When I think back to that Saturday
in 1948, I and many other people
still remember the big blizzard
that we had that day. Some people
never got to the church and some
almost froze getting home from the
wedding as their cars were stuck in
drifts. There was no question about
whether we’d start on our two
week trip to Florida that day. We
were simply glad to have a roof
over our heads and postponed the
trip until the next day.
We planned to move into an old
house that had no electricity, no
heat and no water. It was several
weeks before the house was
liveable. My husband and a friend
wallpapered the rooms. We bought
an electric stove, a refrigerator
and four chairs and a table. He
owned a car and I owned a
bedroom suite. We set up wood and
coal stoves in the kitchen and liv
mgroom and moved in.
I carried water from the well in
the lower comer of our yard and
washed dishes in a pan on the
table. On Saturday nights, we took
a sponge bath with a basin of water
after heating it on the little stove. I
was so happy when my husband
got water piped to the basement of
our house as by that time I had
diapers to wash. It was years

before we had a bathroom and five
of our children were raised 'in a
house without central heating. The
sixth one wasn’t any healthier for
not having little blue fingers in the
mornings.
My husband had one cow, one
heifer and and two calves on our
rented farm. He borrowed
machinery to work the fields and
raised sweetcorn, cabbage and
cauliflower as cash crops plus
tobacco.
Come to think of it, we have
come a long way, but it has been a
lot of work!
