Potato research amended
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Based on evidence from
a public hearing held
Nov. 8 in Denver, Colo.,
the U.S. Department of
Agriculture has
recommended amen
ding the national potato
research and promotion
plan.
Charles Brader, a
marketing official with
USDA’s Agricultural
Marketing Service, said
the public may submit
comments on the
recommended decision
until Jan. 16.
Authorized by the
Potato Research and
Promotion Act, the
program is financed by
an assessment on
potatoes handled.
Producers who do not
wish to contribute are
reimbursed upon
written request.
The proposal would
authorize an increase in
the maximum rate of
assessment from 1 cent
per hundredweight to
one-half of 1 percent of
the past 10-year U.S.
average price received
by growers, as reported
byUSDA.
“The increase is in
tended to counteract
inflation that has cur
tailed program ac
tivities in recent years,”
Brader said.

decision still favors the
