Cattle feeder day set
LANCASTER The Lancaster
County Cattle Feeders’ Day is
scheduled for Tuesday, at the
Farm and Home Center. The event
will begin at 8:30 a.m. with exhibit
visitation and the program starts
promptly at 9; 30 a.m.
The meeting, conducted by The
Penn State Extension Service,
concludes at 3:15 p.m. with a
question and answer session. The
theme for this year’s event is
“What’s ahead in the Beef In
dustry.”
Speakers will include Les
Burdette, Penn State Extension
Beef Specialist on “Alternative
Feedstuffs” and an “Implanting
Update”; William Henning, Penn
State’s new Extension Red Meats

Lebanon Farm-City Council tops in state
Specialist on “The Cattle Feeders
Future” and “The Current Red
Meat Industry”; and Dr. Tom
Drake, Penn State Extension
Veterinarian on a “Veterinarian
Update.” Featured also will be
cattle feeder and Pennsylvania
Cattlemen’s Associatin President,
J. Paul Espy speaking on “Being
An Efficient Cattle Feeder”; as
well as a producer panel on
“Bagging Hay and Silage.”
Anyone interested in cattle
feeding is invited to attend. No
reservations are necessary. Lunch
tickets may be purchased at the
door until 11:00 a.m. In addition to
the formal program there will be
opportunity to inspect commercial
exhibits and visit other cattlemen.

FARM SHOW The Lebanon
County Farm-City Council
received the first place award in
the state for its 1983 program
during ceremonies at Secretary of
Agriculture Night Jan. 9, at the
Farm Show.
State Agriculture Secretary of
Agriculture Penrose Hallowell
presented the award to Richard
Kreider, president of the local
group, capping the first full day of
activities at this year’s Farm
Show. Kreider is a livestock and
grain farmer from Lebanon.
Earning second place honors
was the Berks County Farm-City
Council. Joe Ruth, chairman of the
county council, accepted the
award. Representing the third
place group, the Franklin County
Farm-City Council, was Merle
Bachman, executive director of
the Agricultural Stabilization
Conservation Service in Franklin
County.
The entries were selected from
nominations submitted from
throughout the state for their
outstanding contributions to the
betterment of urban-rural com
munity relations.
Dalton Paul, director of
vocational education for the
Franklin County Area Vo-Tech
School, was named the outstanding
individual in the state for his ef
forts.
Serving as judges for this year’s
contest were Robert Williams,
editor of the Pennsylvania Farmer
magazine; Carolyn Rutter, board
of state directors, Pennsylvania
Farmers Association; and Harlan
Helzer, Pennsylvania Grocers
Association.
The Lebanon Farm-City Council, represented by Richard
