Apple Market News
Tuesday, January 17
Report supplied by PDA
Demand is fair to good. The
market is about steady. Movement
this past week remains constant
with the week before with 14,084
cases of bagged apples sold and
only 1570 cases of traypacks
moved. These figures are the
result of a survey of 10 grower,
packers & shippers.
Export of apples has been one
alternative some growers have
used to improve sale of apples. As
reported by the inspection service
of the Fruit & Vegetable Division,
Bureau of Markets, 51890 cases of
apples have been exported from
Pennsylvania from September 1
through last week. Pennsylvania
apples have been sold in Columbia,
Brazil, Honduras, Panama,
Trinidad, Norway and the United
Kingdom. It might be interesting
to note here that the leading
variety of apples produced in
Europe is Golden (35.4%) and the
runnerup is Red Delicious (13.3%).
Total production in Europe in 1983
was 6,446,000 tons and this was 75%
of the 1982 crop.
