Adams Fruitgrowers win top awards
FARM SHOW - The Adams
County Fruitgrowers Association
and a number of their individual
grower-members won big at the
Farm Show. Their combined effort
brought to Adams County the
highest awards offered for farm
show competition; the Best County
Exhibit for which they will be
awarded the State Horticultural
Association Award; the Gabriel
Heister Award for the largest total
score; and Best of Class Awards
for the Best Bushel of Apples, the
Best Consumer Pack in the 8 to 12
pound class and the Best Plate of 5
apples.
James Bucher of Bendersville
chaired the committee which
processed the fruit, developed the
exhibit and placed it at the Farm
show. Some 35 growers assisted
with the preparation of the exhibit
on Friday, Jan. 6 at Bendersville
Fireball.
Apples for the state-winning
exhibit were contributed by
Hollabaugh Bros., Inc., Mountain
View Fruit Farm, Inc.; Pitzer
Bros. Orchards, Pleasant Valley
fruit Farms, Paul Lerew Or
chards; and Bear Mountain Or
chards.
Hollabaugh Brothers, Bigler
ville, won the coveted Best Bushel
Award with a bushel of Golden
Delicious They also showed the
first place consumer packages 8 to
12 pounds, the first place tray of
20, the second place half bushel
and the second place plate of
Golden Delicious in the Show

Two Best of Class Awards were
won by Philip Pitzer of Aspers. He
won the honors with Rome Beauty
apples entered in the Consumer
Package, 8-12 pound class, and the
Plate of 5 apples. His tray of 20
Romes won a second place.
Billy Brent, Fairfield, was the
leading individual entry from
Adams County. Unofficially, his 75
entries earned 18 first place
awards, 14 second place, 7 third
place, 9 fourth place and 6 fifth
place ribbons. His first place
honors included bushels of Cor
tland and Mclntosh; half bushel or
Consumer package of 16-24 pounds
in Delicious, Mclntosh and
Stayman; the peck class for
Delicious, Jonathan and York; the
tray of Cortland and Mclntosh; the
overwrap trays of Cortland,
Delicious, Mclntosh, Stayman and
Grimes Golden; the plate of
Cortland, Mclntosh and Spartan.
Michael Trostel, Mountain View
Fruit Farms, Biglervilie, provided
32 entries which placed well in the
state-wide competition. Their
winnings included first place
bushels of Delicious, Stayman and
Winter Banana. First place tray of
20 Delicious, Winesap, York Im
perial and Winter Banana.
Mountain View Orchards also
placed first with Delicious,
Stayman, and York in the bagged
class and first with Delicious,
Jonathan, Stayman and Winesap
in the plate class.
