En tomology technician Richard Palecki made the calls. Altogether he reached 1,8 cooperators representing 35 of the 50 sites were parasites were released last summer. None of these farmers had to spray for MBB, although two said they did spray fields to control podworms. When asked whether they felt they had benefited from par ticipation in the project, 12 said 1 Neff Bros, 2 Marlin L Kassel Manheim 3 Judy L Burkholder, Washington Boro YOUTH CLASSES 4-HCM) Wrapper 1 Kevin Witmer Washington Boro Fitter 1 Kevin Witmer Washington Boro Vo-Ag Wrapper 1 Jeff Barley Lancaster 2 Tammy Barley Lancaster 3 Nelson Dohner Elizabethtown Filter I Jeff Barley 2 Kevin Bauman Millersville 3 Laurie Barley Lancaster Bottom-one Third 1 Michael Acord Washington Boro 2 Jere Hoover Conestoga 3 Jeff Barley Middle One-Third 1 Michael Cassel Manheim 2 Laurie Barley 3 Brian Herr Millersville Top One-Third 1 Darrel Hess Pequea 2 Brian Herr 3 Becky Barley Grand Champion Wrapper Gary Neff Grand Champion Filter Gary R Neff Grand Champion Pa Smoking Neff Brothers 1984 Pa. The other six told Palecki they weren’t sure release of the parasite directly benefited them this past summer because weather conditions were unfavorable to MBB build-ups, but added that over a number of years they felt they had seen overall beneficial effects. When asked if they would buy parasites if available from a private company once the pilot project has ended, most growers surveyed indicated that cost would be a major concern. (Under the pilot project, they have been receiving free parasites.) Five growers said they would definitely buy parasites, after seeing them perform against the bean beetle. Twelve others indicated they would do so only if the cost was not significantly higher than chemical controls. Overall, those surveyed said they liked using parasites instead of chemicals to control MBB and considered this a promising ap proach. “Weather conditions over the past four years have made it difficult to assess the overall impact of this pest management program and determine its actual cost benefits,” Palecki says. “There’s been the potential for a high population but between the weather and nurse-plot knockouts where we trap the beetles before they get into the soybeans the pressure hasn’t developed in many fields ” r ——- I THINKING Of \ BUILDING?
