Often I wish that I knew more
about music than I do. My musical
education consisted of a year or
two piano lessons after I was old
enough to drive myself to a
teacher. They say “practice
makes perfect” and I simply do not
practice.
We bought a used piano when our
oldest daughter was in elementary
school and she took lessons and
eventually bought her own piano.
She also practiced faithfully on the
violin and was able to play in her
college orchestra. The other girls
had flute lessons and piano lessons.

Cindy played in her high school
band for several years and also
played solos in our church. But,
our three boys showed no interest
in music lessons.
The reason that I got to thinking
about music was the discovery of
two very old music books that were
in my family. The one was
published “in the thirty-fifth year
of the independence of the United
States of American, A.D. 1810” by
John Wyeth. It belonged to my
great, great grandfather, Henry
Shreiner, and is a “Repository of
Sacred Music.” The cover is in bad
shape and appears to be made of
bits of cloth and some form of
paper pulp. The titles of the songs
range from “Alpha,” “Devotion,”
“Lenox,” “Middletown” and “St.
Helens” to “Treasure.”
Another music book m my
possession is dated 1825 and was
hand drawn by “Martin Shriner,
mill wright.” All the lines, notes
and words are written in ink by
him. Some songs are in German
and I can’t read the script. It
contains titles like “Nobody
coming to marry me," “Blue Eyed
Mary”, “Jefferson’s March” and
“The Washerwoman.” It was
written over a period of six months
and must have taken lots of time
and patience to carefully copy it by
hand.
