The fruit exhibit is evaluated on the quality of the apples and the educational message. The display includes apple products, in ad dition to the Romes, Red Delicious, Red Stamen, Golden Delicious and Red Yorks. There will be 10 to 12 bushels on display. Planning for the Farm Show begins prior to apple harvest. Bucher explains that each of the participating farms and there are seven this year go out and select apples while they are still on the trees. With about 25,000 acres of apples to choose from, this is not the easiest task, Bucher said. The fruit is displayed in the main lobby of the farm show building. “A lot of people go into the farm show and completely miss our exhibit,” Bucher said. After the farm show is over, the exhibit, including the apples are sold. Last year the display went for $lOO. “This year’s competition is a re match with Franklin County. For years, Franklin has been number one and we were number two. We should be number one because we lead the state in apple production,” Bucher said. Bucher predicts that Franklin County will spare no expense in trying to recapture first place, but Adams County farmers are just as determined. This year’s crop because of the severe drought is a little smaller than usual, but Bucher said it was a good crop. “We came up short on bushels this year. There were some big apples, but on the whole it was not a great year,” he said. The display this year, as it was last year, was designed by Gale Kane. The display lists the nutritional information about apples, some of the history of the apple industry and the related processed products. Among the processed products are samples of apple juices, sauce and pie fillings from MFP Musselmans in Biglerville; Lucky Leaf Orrtanna; and Duffy Motts, Bendersville. The apples have been kept in atmosphere controlled rooms and will be as fresh as if they were just picked, Bucher said. There will also be Adams County apples and apple products on sale at the state horticultural booth, Bucher said. Ilf NEED MORE ROOM?
