Again the year has drawn to a
close and we face a new year with
hope for a happy future. No one
knows what the coming year will
bring but we can always expect
something good to happen, even if
it doesn’t always turn out that way.
This year my husband and I have
both been tied down to the farm.
Our six children are all off on their
own, either studying at colleges or
working and living in homes of
their own. So father milks and
tends livestock and I raise the food
that we eat and keep the house in
order. I’m sure we’d both sooner
8*
be busy than idle
quite so busy.
One day just before Christmas,
we and our daughter Judy took a
day trip to Pennsbury Manor near
Philadelphia. This is the recon
structed home of William Penn the
founder of Pennsylvania. He chose
the bend in the Delaware River to
build his magnificent Country
Estate in 1683. The plantation has
numerous outer buildings such as a
brew and bake house. I’m sure the
gardens and orchards would have
been'beautiful in the summer or
spring. The house was furnished
with 17th century pieces and the
rooms were enormous. We had a
tour with a group of school children
and they had many questions for
the guide who was dressed as a
servant.
On our way home we stopped at
the town of Lahaska. It is best
known for Peddler’s Village which
contains 42 charming shops and
restaurants. Judy treated us to
maybe not
luncheon before a large, walk-in throughout the room. It was a nice
fireplace with a blazing fire and change from our workday world
antiques artfully displayed here on our dairy farm.
