Frederick, Md. 301-663-3185 waste problems LEESPORT Winter time is a time for planning next year’s operation for many farmers, says Roy Shryock, Conservation technician for the Soil Con servation Service and animal waste problems should be con sidered in this planning. The drought of last summer and the late fall wetness emphasizes the need for better management, Shryock says. Waste management consists of many segments such as manure itself, milkhouse and parlor water, barnyard runoff, and surface water control. Pollution of our streams and subsurface water supplies have made headlines recently, Shryock says, and action needs to be taken to curb this problem. Manure can be handled in many ways. Earth holding ponds, earth holding ponds with concrete bot toms and ramps, holding tanks, concrete or steel - above or below ground are common ways of storage. Barnyard runoff should be incorporated into one of these structures or a separate lagoon to keep pollutants out of streams and watercourses. Surface water above farmsteads, roof water and springs should be diverted out of areas by diversions, waterways or tile. Manure from these various systems should be tested to insure a proper balance of nutrients can be supplied to the soil for a proper balance of plant food. Mismanagement of providing the proper balance can cause reduced yields, stunted growth of plants and reduce the quality of feed. “Proper incorporating into the soil is very important - time log of plowing under, chiseling or disking allows great losses to nutrients especially nitrogen”, Shryock adds. The Soil Conservation personnel will look at these problems and give recommendations as to proper ways to manage these problems.
