Carolyn Gilles, supervisor of the
Nutrition Dept, presented awards
to retiree Jean Bennett and special
project winner for the NW Region,
Margaret Mills.

Executive Committee John Tautin
introduced Bernard Wingert,
Warren Co. Ext. Agent to make the
final special presentation.
Wingert, while adding humor to
his talk, was serious as he related
the nature of the award. He an
nounced that Crawford Co. Ex
tension Agent Blaine Schlosser has
recently been given the
Distinquished Service Award by
the National Assoc, of Co. Agric.
Agents. In addition Wingert, on
behalf of the Pa. Assoc, of County
Agents, presented Blaine
Schlosser with the coveted “Nit
tany Lion” statue.
He added that Schlosser had
begun his Extension work in 1959
and for the first two years worked
in Warren Co. with him. Schlosser
has been in Crawford County since
1961.
“Blaine is one of 106 in the nation
to be considered the “cream of the
crop”. To be honored by one’s
peers is the highest award one can
receive,” Wingert said.
As Schlosser stepped forward to
accept the well-known Nittany
Lion, the applause continued as the
group stood to honor the hard
working, and well-deserving
county agent.
Schlosser was deeply touched as
he modestly said: “I like to give
credit where credit is due. My
family...the county com
missioners... the secretarial staff
which is second to none, my co
workers with whom I’ve been
fortunate to have little turnover
and most importantly the people of
the county who support the Ex
tension programs. ’ ’

Centaurs 4-H Horse Club
Members of the Centaurs 4-H
Horse Club have been busy during
October and November. They held
a driving clinic and picnic at the
Round Valley Youth Center. Many
members attended the annual
Horse Achievement Dinner in late
what the evening was all about.
For something new this year the
program consisted of seven county
people directly linked in activities
with the Extension. The “Ex
tension People Report” began with
Dave Reusing, a Jersey breeder
involved with the milking school
and the NW Pa. Colored Breed
Assoc. Marge Foreman spoke on
the activities of the Family Living
Advisory Board and 4-H and Liz
Vadosky talked of her satisfaction
working at Nutritional Day Camp.
“My rewards were hugs and
smiles,” she related.
Seventeen-year-old Letha
Vlasnik spoke on her various 4-H
activities; County Council, 4-H
Camp, Textile Judging, etc. She
said that Extension has backed her
all the way and that 4-H has taught
her to “appreciate what you can do
for others and what they do for
you.”
Pat Bender, an avid 4-H sup
porter and mother, is directly
affiliated with the NW Pa. Sheep
Grower’s Assoc, and was in
strumental in getting their Queen
contest started. “I’ve been trusting
Blaine for 15 years to help me with
my sheep”, she added.
The sixth speaker, Mrs. Doneva
Hyde asked of those present: “Can
your hand work without your
arm?” Can a tractor run without
fuel? Can we farm without Ex
tension? She knows as a DHIA
director and 4-H leader the im
portance of the Extension Service.
The final report was by Ron
Kerr, agricultural loan officer for
Penn bank. He explained the im
portance of farm finances and
knowledge of them. He helped with
a two day seminar, in conjunction
with Extension, on “Farm
Financial Management”. “With
farm finances becoming in
creasingly demanding, we’ll see
'e of this.”, he concluded.
October. Recently, they watched
the National Horse Show at
Madison Square Garden and took
part in the Fall Horse Workshop.
They plan to order jackets with the
club name in the near future.
