Rumensin for
dairy heifers
INDIANAPOLIS, Inc. -
Dairymen can now get
replacement heifers into milk
production sooner by increasing
their rate of gain with Rumensin.
The FDA has granted Elanco
Products Company approval for its
use in dairy replacement rations.
First marketed in feedlot cattle
in late 1975, Rumensin is also
widely used in cattle on pasture. In
10 experiments in replacement
heifers, 150 to 200 mgs. per head
per day of Rumensin increased
daily gains an average of about 10
percent.
Research at Arizona State
University and the University of
Idaho shows that body size is more
important than age in regard to
sexual maturity, breeding and
calving. In Idaho, heifers with
accelerated growth rates were 1.9
months younger than other cattle
when they first came into heat.
According to Idaho scientists,
heifers calving at younger ages

tank spreader
FORT ATKINSON, Wi. - Butler
Manufacturing Company
Livestock Systems announces its
new Tank-R 2300 liquid manure
spreader for injector or broadcast
application.
The Butler 2300, with a 30-inch
fill hole and grate, has a forward
slant which maintains drawbar
weight to prevent a negative pole
weight as the tank unloads. The
forward slant serves two purposes.
It allows the tank to fill more
completely, eliminating air
pockets. The forward slant also
allows Butler to front-mount the
pump, resulting in a short
driveline, fewer bearings to
maintain and more clearance at
the rear of the tank.
Requiring at least 75 horsepower
without injectors, it has an ad
justable wheel tread width
spanning 74 to 91 inches. This
variable span makes it operable
with a variety of crop row width.
The heavy-duty tank is attached to
the full-length skid with continuous
welds. The skid is then fastened to

produce more milk per day of life.
Early-bred heifers leave the herd
having produced more milk per
day of life than late-bred heifers.
Penn State University DHI
records show lifetime production
and milk production per day of life
are highest for heifers calving at 22
to 24 months of age. Generally,
ideal breeding weights of dairy
replacement heifers are 650 to 800
pounds, depending on breed. By
increasing gains an average of 10
percent, Rumensin can help
dairymen achieve these breeding
weights at an earlier age.
Research has also demonstrated
that Rumensin has no adverse
effects on the performance of
reproduction of heifers. When fed
at three times the recommended
level, Rumensin did not affect
conception, calving ease, number
of live calves born, calf birth
weight, milk quality or production.

The innovative Tank-R 2300
features a Super Mix system
designed to shred and blend
manure solids evenly and maintain
material in suspension. The Super
Mix system employs a shredder
impeller pump that feeds material
through valves regulating the
agitation.
By recirculating the manure, the
material is suspended and
prevented from settling on long
hauls. The valves also regulate the
spreader’s discharge rate for
complete application control. This
control permits the proper number
of gallons spread per acre based on
individual soil samples.
Another advantage is the ability
to mix commercial liquid fertilizer
with manure to further enhance
fertilizer management.
A tubular steel frame with X
bracing adds rigidity to the Tank-R
2300. There is an optional Plus-2
brake kit that gives four wheel
brakes. Its axles feature heavy
three-inch spindles that slip into
sleeves and bolt in place.
Top fuel efficiency and impressive lugging ability head a long list of standard features
on the new John Deere 40- to 60-hp tractors, according to area dealers.
Base price features include power steering, wet-disk brakes, nine forward and two
reverse speeds, PTO, 3-point hitch and an adjustable seat. A mechanical front-wheel
drive option is avialable, too.
