Plan waste storage facilities
LEBANON Before winter
weather arrives there is still tune
to plan and install animal waste
storage facilities, according to
Tom Thomas of the Soil Con
servation Service.
Most farmers could save a
considerable amount of money in
fertilizer costs with'proper storage
and application of manure. Many
tanners, often in adverse weather
conditions, go through the daily
chore of spreading manure. This
daily process is necessary in many
farm operations due to the lack of a
storage system. Daily spreading
not only is time consuming but also
is an ineffective way to recycle the
nutrients available in the manure.
Manure spread throughout the
winter months is of little value in
the spring due to the loss of
nitrogen while laying in the fields.
These losses can be greatly
reduced with a good manure
management system.
Other advantages of a storage
system include reduced soil
compaction in fields by avoiding
spreading when the ground is wet.
Also, the risk of stream and ground
water pollution can be reduced due
to the fact that no spreading will be
done when the ground is frozen or
too wet.
