Leah Getz lamb tops field of 130 at Manheim Show
BY LAURA ENGLAND
MANHEIM - It Leah Getz
wanted to write a story about her
championship win at the Manheim
Farm Show sheep contest Thur
sday night, she could very well
adapt the fairy tale of the “Ugly
Duckling.”
In describing her Suffolk wether,
Leah said, “He was really ugly
when he was born, and his head
was all bald.”
But despite his looks, 12-year-old
Leah. R 4 Manheim, said he had the
right type and was well built. And
so goes the story of the ugly
duckling which turned into a
beautiful swan.
The daughter of Vance Getz and
Patricia Kimbark, Leah and her
124-pound Suffolk named Stretch
walked off with grand champion
honors at the Manheim Farm Show
amidst a field of 130 entries. A
member of the Lancaster County 4-
H Woolies Club, Leah showed for
only her second year.
Reserve grand champion honors at the Manheim Farm
Show went to Tom Longenecker, R 2 Mount Joy, and his 124-
pound Suffolk cross.
Her champion lamb was bred on
Trinity Farm, owned by her
stepfather, John Kimbark. Stretch
was fed a specially mixed ration
and was walked for about an hour
every day.
Reserve grand champion honors
went to Tom Longenecker and his
124-pound Suffolk cross. A senior
at Donegal High School, 17-year
old Tom has been showing for
three years, and in his first year of
showing won reserve lightweight
honors.
Tom, the son of William and
Peggy Longenecker, R 2 Mount
Joy, said he didn’t think his lamb
would make its weight class and
had no expectations of winning a
title. But his lamb had the finish
that judge Bill MacCauley, Atglen,
was looking for in his champions.
The Longeneckers raise a 350-
head breeding flock and 250
market lambs. Tom said he plans
to show as long as he’s in 4-H or
until he begins college.
Leah Getz. R 4 Manheim, and her 124-pound Suffolk wether named Stretch share the
spotlight as grand champion winners at Manheim Farm Show.
