Greg purchased his winner, named Frisky, at the Harrisburg Expo in March. Greg said he was surprised with his win and had no expectations of winning the show. However, Frisky had the qualities that judge Ted Teaford likes to see in a beef animal. Teaford, a herdsman at Devereux Soleil Farms in Downingtown, said he likes a steer that looks at home in the feedlot. This quality, a medium-sized, meaty animal, is what he saw in his show champion. The overall reserve champion title went to another Angus- Cluanina cross, a “high credibility steer” which won the medium weight class. The 1,085 pound winner was shown by 11-year-old Angela Longenecker. Angela, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Longenecker, 789 Temperance Hill Road, Lititz, bought her steer from Jim Foreman, a Dauphin County breeder. The FFA show was won by Jan Waltz, grand champion, and Barry Geib, reserve champion. Jan, a junior at Manheim Central, won the title with his stylish, 1,100 pound light heavyweight entry. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ardith Waltz, R 6 Manheim, Jan, 16, has been showing for three years and won the Manheim Farm Show title last year. pound Showing an Angus-Chianina steer, Jan said he chose this cross because they grow faster and put on weight more quickly. Since he bought the steer a year ago from Jim Foreman, the animal has gained 450 pounds at a 2% daily rate of gain. The reserve champion title went to the 1,380 pound heavyweight class winner shown by Barry Geib. Geib, 20, is the son of Clarence R. Geib, R 4 Manheim. Barry bought his Chianina crossbred at the Piedmont In vitational Sale in Frederick, Md. The steer was bred by local breeders Elmer Stehman and Ken Brubaker, Harrisburg ' Pike, Lancaster. Following the beef judging, the show exhibitors competed for showmanship awards. The top three finishers in the junior class, ages 12 and under, were John starts in cardboard box sister's garage and finished raising them to market weight.” But his grand champion gilt at the Manheim Fair came out of Dutch Valley Farms and was one of two purchased. The other wasn’t in the top placers at the county 4-H roundup. Hollinger has worked for the past couple of years at the Donald Hershey farm. It was his first year of hog showing at the Manheim Fair and next year also hopes to get into beef showing. The 240-pound heavyweight was selected out of the 120-hog field by Matt Parsons, Penn State swine specialist. Parsons explained he was looking for hogs that buyers and packers would be glad to have - displaying muscling, thickness, leaness, but move about freely and easily. Reserve champion was also a Dutch Valley hog shown by Chris Chapman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Chapman, R 5 Manheim.
