For all crafters who make gifts,
ornaments and holiday
knickknacks, a needlework booklet
is now available free from the
National Needlework Association.
The booklet, called "Fast n’ Fun
Needlecrafts,” contains six dif
ferent projects to make in time for
Christmas.
Ornaments and small gifts are
easy to make using cross-stitch,
needlepoint, embroidery, crochet
and stitching techniques shown in
the needlework booklet. Projects
included are multicolored leg
warmers, a monogrammed vest,
plastic canvas keychain and cross
stitch wreath.
The book is available at fabric,
craft and needlework shops. If
your local shop doesn’t have the
booklet, just send your name,
address and 25 cents to cover
postage to Ellen Appel,
"Needlework Booklet,’’ your
newspaper’s name, Box 1144,
Laguna Beach, CA 92652.
While you wait for the booklet to
arrive, you can make a heart
shaped sachet. With ribbon em
broidery outside and sachet inside,
the heart is perfect as a Christmas
ornament or special gift.
Here are the instructions for the
sachet heart ;
MATERIALS: Fabric scraps;
tace tnm; one-six-teenlh inch
ribbon; tapestry needle; simple
embroidery pattern, iron-on
transfer or water-soluble marking
pen; sachet or stuffing; sewing
supplies; small embroidery hoop.
DIRECTIONS: 1. Draw or select
an embroidery pattern, no larger
than 4-by-4 inches. 2. Draw a heart
shape, no larger than 4-by-4 inches
on your fabric. 3. Iron, trace or
draw embroidery pattern onto
fabric. 4. Embroidery pattern
using stitches described below or

HINTS; To keep ribbon flat as
you embroider, slide finger under
ribbon as you stitch 2 Avoid
knotting ends. Instead, begin and
end by stitching through ribbons on
wrong side of fabric
ASSEMBLY: 1. Trim heart,
leaving an inch all around for
seam. 2. With right sides together,
baste lace to heart, matching raw
edges. 3. Baste nbbon scrap to top
edge for hanging. 4 With right
sides together, baste heart front to
backing.
FINISHING: Machine-stitch
around edges, leaving a small
opening for turning. 2. Turn to
right side. 3. Fill with sachet or
stuffing. 4. Sew closed with tiny
hem stitches.
