Newcomer wins BY KIMBERLY HERR LAMPETER A newcomer to the sheep ring at West Lampeter Fair walked away with grand champion honors Wednesday. Barry Martin, 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Martin, East Earl Rl, won the grand champion market lamb trophy for bis March bom Suffolk, which also took first in the mediumweight class. Barry’s lamb was bred from his own flock. Barry owns 11 of his own sheep, and his family owns 50. Although Barry has been showing sheep for six years, this was the first year he tried his hand at West Lampeter. He has, however, participated in the horse show at the fair. The reserve grand champion went to Deb Martin, IS-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Martin, Conestoga Rl. Deb showed a six-month-old Suffolk, which also took first in the heavyweight class. The lamb was purchased from Jim Stauffer, who also took some first place awards for his sheep. Deb has shown at the fair for the past four years, winning first place in heavyweight four years ago. She has 13 sheep of her own. Judge for the show was Tom Calvert, Berlin, who said, “I was bom on a sheep farm.” In the breeding classes, Tom was looking for “correctness and soundness from a body structure standpoint.” r «■'•"■"I \ I I I I THiNKiI BUILDI !
