A3o—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 1,1983 HARRISBURG - Almac Astra Ultimate, a senior yearling heifer standing 61 inches tall at the withers, towered above all other entries in the Holstein heifer classes Thursday to claim the Junior Champion title of the Eastern National Holstein Show. Ultimate was exhibited by Dreamstreet Holsteins Inc. of Walton, NY. Her owner, Frank Wood, might be inclined to say, it pays to buy quality. Wood pur chased the Quality Ultimate daughter in August, from her breeder Almac Holsteins of London, Ontario. Ultimate is undefeated this year in the show ring, both in the United States and Canada. She won the junior champion title at the On tario Spring Show and at the Delaware County Black and White Show in Walton, NY. Ultimate is bred to Hanover-Hill Triple Threat and is due in January. Judge Peter Heffenng described her as "a tremendous heifer, very stylish. ’ ’ Rel-Vista Stardust, the second place senior yearling, claimed the Reserve Junior Champion. Exhibited by Stardust Syndicate of Fresno, Calif. Stardust is out of the Star bull. Junior Champion of the junior show went to Tri-Sec Elsa Erica, a senior calf exhibited by 17-year-old Terry Brandi of Newton, Wi. Erica earlier this year won the reserve junior champion at the Wisconsin State Holstein Show, and will be going on to competition at the Central National Holstein Show in Madison Wisconsin. Nearly everyone agreed that it was the top bu11...a1l 2,600 pounds. Judge R. Looking at the Grand Champion of Waverly Farms, Clearbrook, Va., the manager of Mayfield Farms in Tennessee and director of the American Jersey Cattle Club said. Holstein heifer classes see Ultimate win International Genpedia, a massive, well-toned four-year-old as the grand and junior champion bull Thursday. Exhibited and bred by H, J. Stewart of Pinehurst Farms, Sheboygan, Wis., the champion was sired by “Browndale Sir Christopher.” The dam is ‘‘ln ternational Guinea,” and is rated as an Excellent 94. Both Stewart and “C In ternational Genpedra” are no strangers to the winner’s circle. Their winning ways include All- American honors in 1981 and 1982. The bull was chosen as a grand champion in the Eastern All- American, held at the Farm Show Complex; at the Central Nationals in Madison, Wis.; and the Western Nationals conducted in Fresno, Calif. His first entry in the All- American Dairy-Show, a junior get-of-sire, came in 1967. He brought four cows, a bull calf and “Genpedra” to Harrisburg for competition. ‘‘VV'e’ve shown three bulls through the All-American,” said Stewart, a 56-year-old dairyman with a 200-acre farm located 20 miles from Tononto, ’Canada. Stewart, who maintains 50 head of Holstein dairy cows, worked as supervisor of the Dairy Herd Improvement with the provincial government in Ontario, Canada, for 15 years before becoming in volved in the dairy business as a fulltime farmer. The reserve grand and junior champion of the show, "Smithland Ultimate Bravely,” a junior yearling bull, was exhibited by Smithland Farms of Canastota, N.Y. The entry was sired by “Quality Ultimate.” The dam is "Lady Browns Elite Boots.” The reserve senior champion Waverly tops Jersey show Reserve grand and reserve senior honors went to "Faithful Advancer Colleen," shown by Marilyn Deaven, of Mar-De Farm, Newburg. The 68-pound milker originally came trom Clyde Mc- Conaughey as a call. The Junior Champion, a senior yearling heifer, was exhibited by Mykrantz Bros, of Wooster, Ohio. The reserve junior was shown by Firestone Homestead Jerseys, also ot Wooster. Nabholz Jerseys, ot West Union, lowa, had the grand champion bull, a senior yearling. The reserve grand champion bull, a junior yearling, came trom Skip-A-Killa Jersey Farm, ot Toms Brook, Va. Mar-De Farms was back in the winners' circle with the senior champion bull. The prenuei breeder and exhibitor banners went to Waverly Farms. The premier sire was owned by Select Sires, ot Columbus, Oh. Judging of the Holstein milking and group classes was still in progress at press time. Coverage of these classes will be earned next week.
