HARRISBURG - Exhibitors
from as far away as Maine, In
diana, Massachusetts, Ohio,
Virginia, New York and Maryland,
competeted Tuesday in the
Eastern National Milking Shor
thorn Show at the Farm Show
complex. Despite the strong out-of
state competition, it was the
Sameul Yoder family of
Shoemakersville, Pennsylvania,
that swept the show with their
Pinesedge Farm purebreds.
Pinesedge winnings included,
senior champion bull, grand
champion bull, senior champion
female, reserve champion female,
grand champion, reserve grand
champion, and best milking
female.
The Yoder family owns and
cares for over 100 purebred
milking shorthorns, in a mixed
herd that also includes Holsteins.
Samuel Yoder won the senior
and grand champion female with
his 4-year-old entry, Seyon Red
Rose. As a 3-year-old “Rose”
made a 300 day record of 10,300
pounds of 4.1 milk, with 424 pounds
of fat, she was bred by Charles
Noyes, of Berwick, Me.
Samuel Yoder is secretary
treasurer of the Pennsylvania
Milking Shorthorn Association. He
also serves as a director for the
American Milking Shorthorn
Society. He won the Premier
Breeder award.
The reserve grand champion,
Pinesedge Cherry Cake, is owned
and bred by Sam's son, Frederick
R. Yoder. Fred was unable to
exhibit “Cherry” himself as he is
presently student teaching in
dustrial arts, at Governor Mifflin
School in Schillington. He will
graduate from Millersville
University in December. He was
signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in
June and played pro-ball this
summer on the Pirates farm team
in Watertown, NY.
The junior champion titles went
to two Maine breeders. Taking the

HARRISBURG - Wayne Shker
stole the show Tuesday, as lus Top
Acres Brown Swiss took command
of the Eastern National com
petition. The Top Acres herd, of St.
Pans, Ohio, topped nine type
classes, and five group classes.
Winning the champion bull,
junior champion female, reserve
junior champion, senior champion
female, grand champion female,
and total performance, the Top
Acres herd tallied enough points to
earn Shker both the Premier
Breeder and Premier Exhibitor
awards of the show.
Winning the grand champion in
the same show in 1979, Sem's
Elegant Diana, again captured the
grand title. Diana, who earlier this
year won the grand champion at
the Ohio State Fair, is an aged cow.
Her six year, 305 day record,
boasts 20,000 pounds of 4.0 milk and
909 pounds of fat. She was bred by
St. Charles Seminary, Oh. Diana
has been nominated three times
for the All-American.
Shker has shown in every
Eastern National Brown Swiss
show since it started. And it looks
as if his dominance may continue
in coming years. Top Acres 2-year
olds dominated their class, win
ning four of the top five places,
relinquishing only third place to
Long View Farm of Thurmont, Md.
Reserve senior champion and
reserve grand champion was won

Charles and Edwin Noyes, Seyon
Farm, Berwick, Me.
Reserve junior champion went to
Sandy River Lena, a senior calf
exhibited by Tammy Lisa York,
Sandy River Farms, Farmington,
Me.
Kuszmar Farm of Batavia, NY
also made a strong showing,
especially in the aged cow class
where they captured the top two
places and were awarded the two
best udders. Kuszmar cattle
placed high in many classes, and
won their exhibitors the Premier
Exhibitor award.
Judge John W. Rinehart of
Taneytown, Md., commented,
“Since I saw the show a few years
ago, they appear to be a nicer
uddered group of cattle, with more
dairyness, sharpness, and
angularity. I was very pleased
with the overall quality, it ran deep
in the classes.”
Marvin L. Kruse, executive
secretary of the American Milking
Shorthorn Society based in
Springfield, Missouri, said,
“Milking Shorthorn breeders have
made much gentic progress m the
last ten years. We are striving for
more dairyness.... Introduction of
the Llawarra Milking Shorthorn
bloodlines from Australia has
contributed greatly to the un
proved dairy character of our
American Milking Shorthorns. ’ ’

Snuthville, Oh; and Burnt Mills

Judge Wiliam Etglen, of Virginia

mented, "There was outstanding
quality in every class. There
wasn’t a weak class all day. ...The
show was very well organized,
Pennsylvania is to be com
mended.”
And a grand show it was,
highlighted by the Swiss Parade of
Champions. Spectators and
exhibitors of all breeds gathered to
watch as the strong yet graceful
champion Swiss cows, donning the
tradional cow bells of their
motherland, were lead through the
ring with an accompaniment of
Alpine yodeling. The leaders were
dressed in colorful matching caps
and vests, carryin on the tradition
of the parade that started in 1938.
