Eastern National to host 1,000 livestock entries TIMONIUM, Md. Nearly 1,000 head of livestock from 20 states will compete for breed awards at the Eastern National Livestock Show next week at the Maryland State Fair Grounds. The 1983 show, set for Oct. 5-3 at Timomum, will be one of the largest in recent years, according to show president, Lawrason Sayre. Eight breeds of beef cattle will be shown with the Polled Herefords providing the greatest numbers. Over 280 Hereford cattle will parade before Judge W.W. Donaldson, a well known breeder from Ontario, Canada. The Eastern National will be one of six American Polled Hereford "Standard of Perfection” shows in the nation. Exhibitors from as far as Texas and Missouri will be competing for points ip this feature show. Sayre reported that numbers are up in all of the breeds. Important to youth will be the 4- H and Future Farmers of American competition in breeding heifers, market steers, market Jambs and market hogs. The Eastern National will be the culmination of these projects for many of the youth, with the animals having reached market weight. The show competition will be held at the State Fair Grounds, and the “Sale of Champions” will be held at Harbour Place in downtown Baltimore. The "Sale of Cham pions,” listed for 12:30 p.m., Oct. 7, will feature over 40 of the cham pion steers, lambs and hogs to be auctioned to the highest bidders, on the promenade near the Constellation. The bid ding will be open to individual* or businesses interested in pur chasing gram-fed livestock, ready for the freezer. Youth will take over the Eastern National Oct. 8 as teams of four 4-H members and teams of seven in dividuals representing colleges compete in the Livestock Judging Contest. Over 100 students from IS different colleges and 60 4-H members from 15 states will judge 12 animal classes of four animals each. Each contestant must present oral reasons for his or her placings on eight designated classes. Of special interest to youngsters of all ages will be the Kiddie Barn, containing many types of farm animals and featuring hatching chicks. This will be open each day of the show.
