NOTICE: In our drouthv areas corn is not
eanng-up properly, and it is drying down
very rapidly. One way to salvage the
drouth-stricken crop is to ensile it. For
good fermentation, the crop should be
ensiled at 60 to 65 percent moisture.
It is going to be difficult to estimate the
moisture content of the crop accurately.
Stunted plants, with good ear
development, may be drier than usual.
However, plants with little or no ear
development, may run higher in moisture
than your eye may lead you to believe.
Once most of the leaves below the ear
have dried up and died, moisture content
could drop rapidly. To keep on top of the
situation, observe fields frequently. In
deciding when to cut, consider the
condition of the whole field, and of
nearby fields which you might be ensiling
at the same time. The higher moisture
content ot the greener areas will help
offset the lack of moisture in the drier
corn, but to be of benefit, it should be
mixed thoroughly.
