BLUE BALL It was a hot, old
time in Blue Ball in more ways
than one on Wednesday.
A sweltering September sun had
afternoon temperatures pushing
90.
And beneath that sun, 20 tons of
hot peppers were being loaded by
v. -cstoga Valley Growers for
shiprut... Massachusetts.
Now, that’s a hot peppers -
more than 1,500 busnols to be
exact.
And, Lancaster County hot

cash vegetable crop this year
among the Conestoga Valley
Growers - are finding their way
into delis, chili and subs
throughout the country and even
beyond.
“We’ve suddenly found a large
market out there for the hot
peppers,’’ explains lister .
Martin, of Conestoga Valley
Growers.
“It has the potential to become a
real good cash crop for our

It’s a hot time in Blue Ball
growers.”
The growers have been hit hard
this year by the drought and heat
just like everyone else. For
example, the cantaloupe crop was
only about 15 percent of its
potential.
“We had the demand for lopes,"
Martin said. But we didn't have
them and many were small
The growers are shipping three
main varieties of hot peppers -
Hungarian Wax, which look like
the Sweet Banana and the round
Hot Cherry. A few jalapenas were
also grown.

Approximately 70 acres of hot
peppers were planted in I Lancaster
County, many in the southern
portion nearQuarryville.
Some of the peppers showed
stress, being smaller and
somewhat dehydrated. But other
peppers were large and had the
bright coloring, showing the ef
fects of better management.
In a good year, hot peppers can
yield 1,000 bushels to the acre with
picking from mid-June to frost.

planting and picking by about a
month. As a cash crop, they can
bring $3.00 a bushel.
Fall weather will determine if
the growers dig horseradish this
year or wait until spring.
This year also pointed up the
importance of irrigation in the
Growers’ program, according to
Martin.
Martin explained that in addition
to his own trickle system he also
had the expense last year of a new
well. But this year, it more than
paid for itself a couple of times
over, he explained.
