Quality Forage
Don’t knock the weather; most
people would have a hard tune
starting a conversation if it didn’t
change once in awhile. How true
but it would have been nice to have
had a few normal days this spring.
On the other hand, I did read one

It's impossible.
Because, whether you raise rabbits,

There’s the economical, modular

100 ft. rolls of galvanized wire mesh, for
the do-it-yourself-er.
They all reflect Safeguard’s engineering
and design philosophy—to help your

had so far this year will do more to
reduce agricultural surpluses than
all the past and proposed govern

related to forage harvest than any
other single factor. With inclement

weather thru much of the early hay
crop making season, we now have
to play catch up. In many cases, it
would be justifiable to hire ad
ditional help and equipment. If you
do this be careful! Take some
preventative medicine like steps:
(1) hire competent help; (2) make
sure the help can handle equip
ment-put them thru some routine
tests such as stopping, turning off
PTO power, turning the equipment
around; (3) give the help some
safety rules that must be followed
such as turning equipment off
when re-fuelmg, repairing, or
unclogging; (4) have equipment in
reasonably safe state of repair; (5)
make sure your workmens com
pensation insurance covers all
hired help.
Forage quality is important.
Time for making good quality hay
crop forage is rapidly running out.
Down time due to broken
machinery or injured people can
cause great financial harm. So
remember this: Hiring of ad
ditional labor, extra long hours of
field work and hiring of additional
equipment may be some solutions
to the problem of how do I get the
best quality forage out of the tune 1
have left. But there is no such thing
as a perfect solution. Every
solution, no matter how good,
creates new problems.

Effect on Overall Feeding
Program
Forage quality can have no
effect on the total feeding
program. It effects the amount of
forage consumption by the
animals, can increase or decrease
ration costs, and may even reduce
or increase the total rations
digestibility. Above all you must
make good use of forage testing if
you are interested m receiving the
maximum profit for your inputs.
Next Year’s Feed Efficiency
The present forage crop will
have a tremendous affect on this
winter’s feed efficiency. In the

winter, I found that some farmers
evidently sold two to two and a half
tunes as much livestock product
per dollar of feed used as did other
farmers. This coming year one
question that I intend to explore in
my farm business enterprise
analysis is “how many pounds of
grain and concentrate is a
dairyman or hog fanner using to
produce 100 pounds of milk or
pork?” 1 also want to see how
many pounds of forage is being
used to produce 100 pounds of milk.
I suspect that the grain to milk
ratio is far different on many
farms than most fanners realize.
