SC 4-H’ers parade through Bi,
HARRISBURG - One hundred
seventy-six 4-H club members
from seven counties exhibited 251
blue ribbon winning dairy project
animals Monday in the 16th Annual
Southcentral District 4-H Dairy
Show held at the Farm Show
Building, Harrisburg.
The entries from the seven
Southcentral Pennsylvania
counties included, 16 entries from
Adams County, 33 entries from
Cumberland, 27 entries from
Dauphin, 44 entries from Franklin,
62 entries from Lancaster, 28
entries from Lebanon, and 41
entries from York County.
Included in the in the animals
exhibited were 128 Holsteins, 27
Brown Swiss, 49 Jerseys, 18
Ayrshires, 27 Guernseys and 2
Milking Shorthorns.
Type judge for the Brown Swiss,
Guernsey and Holstein breeds was
Lee Majeskie, Dairy Specialist
from the University of Maryland,
who coaches the Maryland 4-H and
collegiate dairy judging teams.
Mike Stiles of Virginia judged
the Ayrshire and Jersey type
classes. Majeskie and Stiles,
judging in side by side rings,
worked in a coordinated effort that
moved the classes through the ring
in good time. They gave the
exhibiting 4-H members and ob
servers concise and exacting
reasons for their placings.
During the course of the show,
exhibitors who did an outstanding
job of fitting and showing their
animals were given a Master
Fitter or Master Showman Award.

came out with top honors as his very dairy junior 2-year-old
won the Grand Champion. Reserve Champion went to a 4-
year-old exhibited by Jennifer Weimer. Pictured with the

Myers, Maryland.
Glenn Shirk, county agent -
agriculture, and show manager,
estimated 400 spectators were
present during the day. Shirk also
noted that the top blue ribbon
animals in each class are eligible
to compete in the Pennsylvania
Junior Dairy Show which will be
held Monday, September 26, at the
Pennsylvania State Farm Show in
Harrisburg. 4-H members are
limited to exhibiting two animals
m the Junior Show.
The district show was sponsored
by the Cooperative Extension
Service of The Pennsylvania State
University. Extension personnel
did an excellent job of coordinating
the show. Classes ran beck to beck,
in two side by side rings, without
delay or confusion. Adult volun
teers working as ring checkers,
nng managers, class starters, ring
clerks, and sanitary engineers,
helped the show run smoothly.
A very dairy, extremely sharp,
junior 2-year-old exhibited by
Thomas McCauley of
Elizabethtown, won the Grand
Champion of the Holstein breed, in
competition with 127 other
Holsteins. The young cow, Queen
Star Sexy, is a Sexation daughter.
She took the Grand Champion title
at the Lancaster County 4-H show
and was the Junior Champion at
last year’s Elizabethtown Fair.
McCauley is a member of the
Lancaster County 4-H Dairy Club,
and is in his third year of showing.
Reserve Grand Champion of the
Holstein breed went to Jennifer
Weimer, New Oxford, Adams
County. Jennifer exhibited a
Marvex daughter, Elsie Weim-
Sharr Marvex, to win the title. In
her fourth year of showing dairy
cattle, Jennifer will be taking two
4-H animals and two FFA animals
to the Junior Dairy Show. Jennifer
is a member of the Adams County
Dairy 4-H Club and is a sophmore
at New Oxford High School.
In the Guernsey breed Douglas
Layman, 17, a member of the
Quincy-Washington 4-H Club, won
the Grand Champion with his aged
cow, Hoovervilie Winston Janice.
Doug has been showing for nine
years, he exhibited two animals in
Monday’s show, both are eligible to
go to the state show.
The Reserve Champion, went to
McCulloughs Choice Dona, a junior
2-year-old, exhibited by 12-year-old
Jeff McCullough. Jeff is a member
of the Blue Mountain 4-H Club.
Patty Dreisbach, Pennsylvania
Jersey Queen, presented a brother
and sister team from Hamburg
with the Championship titles in the
Jersey breed. It was the second
consecutive year that Doug and
Tina Martin stood side by side in
the winners circle. Doug, 18,
captured the Grand again this year
with his 4-year-old, Top-O-Hill
Milestone Faithful, who claimed
the same title last year. Tina won
the Reserve Grand Champion with
her junior 2-year-old, Cowdale
Samsonite Delight. Doug and Tina
are both members of the Green
Castle Atrium 4-H Dairy Club.
Both exhibited four animals each
in Monday’s show, and both will
taking two animals each to the
state show.
Judy Mase, 11, a member of the
NoSoAn Dairy Club in Lebanon
took the Grand Champion in the
Brown Swiss breed with a 3-year
old, Jessie Improver Lena, bred by
her brother Gary.
The Reserve Grand went- to
David Feidt, 18, for his aged cow,
Ramy Design Rochelle. Feidt is a
veteran showman, having
exhibited dairy cattle for 11 years.
He is a member of the Dauphin
County 4-H Dairy Club.
And, another brother-sister team
from Millersburg took the
championship titles in the Ayrshire
breed. Debrorah Shetterly took the
Grand with her senior 2-year-old,
Sycamore Meade Champ’s Luvie,
as her brother, Steven next to her
with the Reserve Grand, Sycamore
Meade Champ’s Bessie, a 3-year
old.
