cool off in the summer, but they
serve another very useful pur
pose... fire protection. One
problem we’ve seen however is
that too many farm ponds are
located in a place where the fire
trucks cannot drive close enough in
wet weather. Most engines must be
within 25 feet of the water in order
to pump the water to the fire.
We suggest that pond owners
have an all-weather lane to the side
of the pond. This may not be
important in the summer months
when the ground is dry and solid,
but in the early spring the fire
truck may not be able to travel
through the soft mud to reach the
water. There have been cases
where the fire truck was stuck in
the mud between the main raod
and pond while the building burned
to the ground. Be sure the water in
your farm pond can be used by
your local fire company in case of
fire.

my business. I feel if this little
group is going to ride on the
reputation of the general mem
bership, that what they do and are,
is my business. The general
membership has no trouble getting
information from our other ser
vices. Even PAGMA with
1150,000.00 of red ink, gave a very
open report at the last annual
meeting.
I ask each of you members to
clip my letter out and put it in your
wallet. Wherever you go, take it
along and when you see a fellow
member, discuss what I have been
sincere enough to put in print.
Please go to your county P.D.
meeting and try to get the com
mittee to take action. Remember
that it may take some extra effort
to get this issue to the point of
discussion since, in some cases,
the most vocal may be a “FAR
MER” member.
A minority group in our
organization got “FARMER”
started by making it look better
than P.E.G. (Penna. for Effective
Government).
I think that we, the general
members, should stop “PAR
MER” now. We can do this by a
strong policy being passes at your
local annual meeting and sending
delegates to the state annual
meeting who will support that
policy. 1 suggest that the mem
bership be more involved in who is
