contest held at State 4-H Achievement Days on The Pennsylvania State University’s
main campus. From left are: Kurt Malecki, summer horticulture assistant and coach,
Ray Wallace. Quarryville; Brian Harnish, Christiana; Bob Walbrecht, Manheim, and
Becky Rorabaugh, Conestoga. Becky also received the highest individual score of the
judging participants.

4-H’ers made a strong showing at
Pennsylvania State 4-H
Achievement Days held August 8-
10 at Penn State’s University Park
Campus.
Awards to Bucks County 4-H’ers
were announced by Or. Maurice
Kramer, state 4-H program
director, and Debra Gregory,
Bucks Co. 4-H coordinator.
Winning first place in en
tomology judging were: Jenny
Volz and Tim Kohl, Doylestown,
and Andrew Rumbold,
Mechanicsville. The team was
coached by Dee Walker,
Doylestown.
Blue ribbons for their 4-H Seeing
Puppy Demonstration went to
Arlene Miller, Richboro, and
Karen Scarborough, Doylestown.
Holding off stiff competition to
capture second place in the horse
bowl category was the team of
Came Stuart and Jennifer Mease,
Hellertown; Bonnie Hottle,
Cooper sburg; and Sue Scott,
Kintnersville. The horse bowl team
was coached by Mrs. Nancy
Hottle, Coopersburg.
Darlene Buckman, Perkasie;
Sharyn Atler, Ivyland; Lynn Betts,
New Hope; and Luci Miller,
Richboro, brought third place
ribbons home to Bucks Co. in the
clothing and textiles judging
competition. Charlene Gormley,
Newtown, coached this team.
The consumerama team also
captured'third place m the state.
Team members are Lorraine
Luzerne Co.
Winners Announced
WILKES-BARRE - Fourteen 4-
H Club members from Luzerne
County took part in the 1983 4-H
State Achievement Days recently
at Penn State.
The clothing and textile iden
tification and judging team was
awarded 18th place honors. The
team consisted of Louise Eikov,
Hazleton; Laura Staudenmeier
Conyngham; and Heather
Penkala, Drums.
This year’s categories included
knowledge in selecting items on a
shopping trip, selecting a sewing
machine, pressing ready-made
clothes and home sewing, selecting
fabric, and clothing construction
techniques.
Luzerne County’s physical fit
ness team captured 11th place
honors. The team included Joe
Good, Heidi Herold, Jennifer
Holmes and Stephen Wychock, all
ofMountaintop.
The physical fitness team was
judged on all around fitness in
seven events. The seven events
were nutrition knowledge, two
mile run, flexed leg sit-ups, in
dividual physical stunt, pull-ups, 50
yard dash, and a one mile relay.
Steven Wychock was also the top
Bucks Co.
Compete
Rafter, Coopersburg; Kathy
Hager, Kintnersvllle; Cathy Bray,
Washington Crossing; and Bar
bara Rowe, Wrightstown. The
team was coached by Debra
Gregory, Doyles town.
Joan Comly, Ottsville, was the
seventh place individual in the
flower judging contest.
In the riflery competition, David
Montgomery was the eighth high
individual, and Guy Rothermel
was in 17th place. Both boys are
from Doyles town.
Vegetable judging saw the Bucks
County team placing ninth.
Members were: Carol and John
Sempowski, Kintnersville; and
Renee Mullowney, Churchville.
The team was coached by Martie
Horn, Doylestown.
Susan Schoefield, Morrisville,
placed ninth in the consumer
education presentation event.
Ira Kerns, Chalfont, and Karen
Lunova, Churchville, participated
in the public speaking competition
receiving red and white ribbons,
respectively.
Capturing 11th place in the
livestock judging event were
David Samkavitz and Arthur
Yoder, Doylestown; Bob Engle,
Richboro, and Bill Scott, Pineville.
The livestock team is coached by
Sharon Raab, Hartsville.
Members of the horse judging
team were: Kristine Kohl and
Kelly Smithgall, Doylestown; and
Elise Sullivan Langhome. The
team was coached by Mrs. Maria
Campomizzi, Hulraeviiie.

Awarded fourth place honors
was the vegetable judging
consisting of Robin Staudenmeier,
Conyngham; David Smith,
Wapwallopen; and Steve Fur
nanage, Sugarloaf.
The 4-H’ers had to identify
vegetable plants by their parts,
fruit, or seed, insects, diseases,
and weeds.
Robert Karmonick was awarded
a red merit ribbon for his animal
science demonstration, entitled
“Caring of Your Cat”. Also Eileen
Kenny, Mountaintop, received a
blue merit award for her
demonstration in the Animal
Science division, entitled “Three
Day Events Do it Three Days,
Three Ways.”
Linda Justick, Avoca, and Gail
Partington, Sugarloaf,
represented the Northeast Region
in the state 4-H Fashion Revue.
Gail Partington was selected as
one of the top 10 finalists.
Chaperoning the delegates were
Dorothy Staudenmeier,
Conyngham; Scott Lehman, State
College; and Kathy Wychock,
Luzerne County 4-H summer
assistant.
