A24—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 27,1983 Byler 3-year-old wins BY PATTY GROSS MOCK Staff Correspondent HUNTINGDON - An out standing three-year-old cow owned by Jefferson Byler, RlPetersburg, went home with the highest award last Saturday following the Central Championship Holstein Show at the Huntingdon County Fairgrounds. Byerlawn Correlation Spice first caught the eye of Judge Lowell Lindsey, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, in her 3-year-old division. From that time on “Spice” was a winner everytime she walked into the show ring. The first place blue ribbon in her class was followed by the best udder of the group and the show’s best female - bred and owned by exhibitor. She was selected the senior champion female, which was finally topped by the honor of grand champion. Milk boat carton race Overall winner was the “S.S. Bongo” and its crew from the Colony Baptist Youth, Rising Sun. A special “Titanic” award, given to the entry that went down “with the most class,” went to the S.S. Caterers, of Rising Sun Methodist Church. As the last milk jugs were going down, a milk-promoting hot-air balloon was being inflated by a ground crew that included members of a New Jersey dairy farm family. The John Hubschmidt family was lending a hand with the giant floating aircraft and helping owner, John Blair, Bridgeton, N. J. Martha Hubschmidt originated the milk promotion idea when her brother, Blair, put together his hot air craft. She stitched together a 6- foot by 40-foot banner that reads “M-M-Milk” in 5-foot letters, and is attached to the side of the Cosmic cow, built of chocolate milk cartons, was picked most original and highest carton-count winner with 336 cartons. The applause filled night brought a busy, but worthwhile week to a close for the Byler family. The premier dairy animal was named grand champion of the Huntingdon County Fair earlier in the week. Talk around the dairy barns was that “Spice” would be tough to beat in the championship show. Those veteran showmen knew what they were walking about. She edged out the aged cow entry by Singing Brook Farms. Singing Brook J Dale, owned by the Obie Snider family, Imler, captured the reserve grand champion of the Central Region Show. The reserve Uiduipion, sired by Paclamar Astro Jet, is out of Singing Brook BE Daisey. She garnered several other high (Continued from Page A2O) balloon. Truly a“ homemade design,” the nylon sections of the balloon were each cut by Blair from special nylon parachute fabric, numbered and stitched together on a sewing machine. Blair then wove a gondola basket of wicker to carry him and his equipment, and a passenger or two. Although the Blair-Hubschmidt ground crew had the balloon partially filled with propane heated air, a brisk wind prevented the planned launch. However, the craft has flown its milk promotion message several times this summer, including appearances at the county fair and dairy day.
