UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Bob and Donna Spangler’s farm near Union Bridge was the setting for the annual picnic of the Maryland Hampshire Sheep Association. Following a potluck lunch, President Betty Hope presided at the brief business meeting. The Program Committee arranged presentations by Richard Barczewski of the Department of Animal Science at the University of Maryland and Jim Cretcher, executive secretary of the American Hampshire Sheep Association. Barczewski, who also happens to be a sheep breeder, dealt with the MdL Hampshire Assn, holds picnic subject of preparing the ewe flock for breeding, indicating that fat ewes tend to be inefficient. Bare zewski stressed the importance of grouping ewes for flushing. Although this causes problems especially for the small producer Barczewski insisted it will pay ilividends in terms of fertility. Cretcber brought a first-hand report from the National Type Conference held recently in Sedaha, Mo. It was interesting to note that our modern Hampslures took similar to those of the early 1900 s but not much like the Hampslures of the 19505. The Type Conference covered all ' '-4£>, 'f~MfS'~i^£ aspects of raising purebred Hampshire sheep. Speakers from around the country had shared their expertise in selection, breeding techniques, record keeping, marketing, etc. Cretcher distributed an outline of the con ference and highlighted the major points of each topic.
